No idea why we think we can just throw assets like this away.
You can only fine a player for 2 weeks, and he's clearly been unable to play for 6 months. His wages would have bene more than any fee we'd have got for him with 5 months left on his deal coming off a 6 month ban.

In a proper market at that time he'd have been worth at least 2 or 3 million. It'd have had to be a knock down price but a lot would have wanted him even given all that.

He's signed a 5 month deal at Boro. With whatever's gone on, we wouldn't have been able to sell him for any real fee.

What people are forgetting is that even if it was a 6 month ban, at the time no one knew whether this season was going to start or not. So potentially we could have been paying him for longer than 6 months , with no football and then have a player who was a free agent. imo beside the moral decision, economically it was a no brainer as we were never gonna a get anything for him anyway.

Not if he couldn't play for 6 months

City have saved all the money he would have been paid in the last 6 months and they've got a high-earning, inconsistent player off the books. Big win if you ask me.

I could and probably am wrong here but if the club sacked the player then wouldn't it have been required to pay up his contract or at the very least pay up a substantial part of it including his agent's take?

    Why?

If he broke his contract why would the club have to pay him (and his agent)?

Mendez-Laing has been released by Middlesbrough, but Warnock has invited him to their pre-season training.

Inviting him to join us pre-season training sounds nothing more than just a favour to keep him in shape for possible suitors.

Although he is only 29 there has to be a bit of suspicion he is perhaps past his best and the long lay off from football won't help. Might have to drop down to league one.

Or they don't want to pay him for the summer, and will offer something to him at the start of the season if he hasn't gone elsewhere. I imagine a lot of this sort of thing will happen this summer. Why sign up someone now and pay him thousands of pounds per week during the summer break?
