What are the daftest chants you’ve heard down the City?

Interesting. In my (unreliable) memory it was sung when City were playing particularly badly. But what you say makes sense.

Forest, Liverpool fans etc used to sing ‘Compared to the boys in red’ for the last line rather than ‘And the rest are f*cking dead’ which implies it was about the opposition.
