Bairstow isn't a test player to my mind, but maybe that's me being a bit harsh - there's no way he's a test number three though.

I'm not sure if England's rotation policy means that he'll play in the next match or not? I certainly hope not. Lawrence and Crawley look more technically suited to being a number 3.

Is it too much to think that India could get skittled out for 38 again, like they did in Australia?

    India win by 10 wickets!

It just goes to show that with a bit of application you can score runs, even if the pitch is poor.

Shirley there is a threshold regarding test match batting track standards. 17 wickets in a day early in the match must call the pitch quality into question.

Itll be interesting to see what the next test is like. Same ground but with a red ball. Yes there were bad batting decisions, but the pitch was just too difficult to bat on to make it a fair contest between bat and ball, which is what test cricket should be about.

As someone said on another City messageboard, if that pitch had been produced for a county Championship match, the home team would have had points deducted for an unfit pitch - there was a lot of fuss about the pitch for the last test, but India’s number eight Ashein proved you could bat on it.

A number of the dismissals were from balls that went straight on because the batsmen were frightened out of their wits by the fact that there was some turn. A number fell to rank poor shots as well e.g. Bairstow swinging across the line first ball and nearly getting out and then getting out second ball. You would be hard pressed to find a more inept and gutless batting display than the England second innings. Anything over 120 would have been a good lead but they never looked capable of getting it. They just stood there and let the India bowlers do what they wanted. Roots captaincy was poor as well - people on the boundaries when India were 6/7 down first innings and starting the India second innings with four men out deep when they had under 50 runs to get.

You have to have some form of standards for the wicket preparation allowing a home side to do whatever they want is not correct ,this is sport for everyone to watch and they deserve the 5 days . Yes some Indians did well however they play with these types of wickets and this would favour the home side , surely the standard of the game should guarantee a competitive game .

And Virat Kohli should not get away with his constant bickering of the umpires, I thought cricket was beyond that?

    in
But the Indian batting was not much better in the first innings, even Root managed to get 5 wickets FFS.
