2030 UK & Ireland World Cup bid

The Football Associations (Wales, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland & Scotland) and government partners of the UK and Ireland are delighted that the UK Government has committed to support a prospective five-association bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The FA's will continue to undertake feasibility work to assess the viability of a bid before FIFA formally open the process in 2022.

Staging a FIFA World Cup would provide an incredible opportunity to deliver tangible benefits for our nations.

If a decision is made to bid for the event, the FA's look forward to presenting our hosting proposals to FIFA and the wider global football community.

    End

And there’s an announcement expected in the budget this week I believe as well regarding this.

I see that there are already four confirmed bids, including two from UEFA.

Rumania, Greece, Bulgaria & Serbia (also bidding for Euro 2028)
    Spain & Portugal
    Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay & Chile
    Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria

In theory it’s Europe’s turn on the rota but who knows!

I read that stadiums have to be 40,000+ to enter into conversation about hosting a game so it's likely that only Millennium Stadium is used in Wales and no stadiums are used in Northern Ireland. Final no doubt will be played at Wembley so is that the semis in Wales and Scotland and third place game in Ireland? Or do we have semi in Scotland and midlands? How will location of games be broken down in terms of number and importance?

Will be interesting to see how the possible rearranged Euros impacts this. There were rumours about hosting it in England (or England, Scotland and Wales) so would that make it less likely to host two tournaments in 10 years?

How does 5 automatic qualifying spots work? Does that mean only 11 from rest of Europe? Does it strengthen argument that GB and NI should be 1 side or do you do away with automatic qualification for this tournament?

One final one, is this where money in a country still suffering with the pandemic should be spent? While the Olympics were fantastic there were a whole number of charities that lost out on funding in order for that money to be redirected so who is losing out this time?

Maybe, qualification wasn’t a factor in Platini’s European tour idea.

I suppose the difference between this and the Olympics would be that the infrastructure is already in place. England have been trying for a tournament for years so there will be plans ready to go, we have the stadiums, bars, hotels etc able to cope with it in the UK. There are 18 (I think) 40,000+ stadiums in the UK
