Thread: Building supplies shortage

  1. #1

    Building supplies shortage

Had occasion to attempt to buy quick-setting cement, ballast, screws and nails from B&Q recently.

Shocked at the empty bays. And the quality of the fence posts bought could be described as 'gash'.

This seems to be the immediate future: https://www.homebuilding.co.uk/news/...rials-shortage

At least the plaster supply appears to be better.

Shortages and higher prices in the pipeline (if the pipe is available).

    Re: Building supplies shortage

I sell New Vans and there is a massive shortage there and getting worse.

It’s a combination of Covid (restrictions in flow and production supply)

    Ships getting stuck in Egypt.
Brexit hasn’t helped as some manufacturers stopped production to the U.K. as per the uncertainty in tariffs at the time still having a knock on effect.

Business with 0% bounce back loans on business purchases, making vehicles, plant and machinery purchases attractive.

Courier and postal industry booming as per the obvious.

ULEZ and Clean air zones around the country and EU growing in size and getting more expensive to drive old and more polluting vehicles and forcing them off the road.

Now there are manufacturers shutting factories, because of a Semi conductor shortage leading to 4-6 moves addition lead times.
Some manufacturers stating 2022 for specialist Vans such as Chassis, Tipper, Dropside, Fridge Luton’s etc.

In effect demand has rocketed with builders and DIY because in many cases people have had time on their hands and surplus money from not being able to go out and on holiday.

All this is pushing up the price of used Vans and I have seen used ones fetching £2/3k more than pre lockdown.

The material shortage not just a UK issue.

Prices of timber have rocketed worldwide

Working in housebuilding we've had increases pretty much every month for the last 6, and not negligible ones either

I had reason to visit a timber merchants a few weeks back. Quite literally business was conducted through their fence. I did ask about supply. Anything, in bulk order, coming in from Sweden, is already assigned to customers possibly before it is even cut down. Prices have doubled over the last year. The quality of timber being used for trellises and the like is very poor. Won't last a year or so. Very soft rough cut.
As for bbqs/fire pits/sand/cement/imported patio slabs/garden furniture/some imported plants...join the queue. We have a nut/screws/washers and bolts importer by us. Chaos there. Cant get items into the country quick enough and out to stockists. They gave me a freebie bag of screws and washers just to make room in their reception which was also overflowing! Most of their stuff comes in from Germany. Similarly a company that makes gutters/fascia and the like. They (try) to import from Czec Republic. Cant get the sheet metal in quick enough (or the skilled staff). Fruit picking is going to be interesting, too. One producer by us has relied on Bulgarian and Romanian workers for years. Net result will, no doubt, be a rise in inflation and, eventually, interest rates.

Isn't the building supply shortage due in part to the huge number of houses being built?

    Re: Building supplies shortage

I was due to have some electrical work done this week but had to be postponed due to delays in supplies.
The knock on from the Suez blockage is to blame apparently

Part due to more houses being built following changes in planning to make it easier for developers to build on Green Belt land and part due to people doing up their houses and gardens during lockdown. Plus supply issues from abroad linked to containers clogging up ports exacerbated a while back by the Suez canal blockage. In simple terms, UK needs to export more stuff to avoid empty containers going back to China.

I'm guessing lot is in play :

Shipping restrictions due to Covid .
    Supply chain issues.
Canada timber beetle infestation issues from 2020
Lumber price increases are very high
New builds ( lots in Cardiff area alone )
Shop closures and reduction in ordering .
Folk wanting building extensions instead of spending elsewhere in lockdown.
    Brexit trade renegotiations .

    Perfect storm

    Most boring post this evening:

I have replaced many fence posts in my garden over the last two years but the last two, inserted in the ground in the last few months ago, have warped ridiculously. The older ones are fine.

    Where do you work?

I recently got a grand less than I paid for a Transit Custom Limited with 77,000 miles on it after 3 years rental .
I do get great discounts on new vehicles.
I cannot get any new commercial vehicles other than factory orders.
I was quoted February 22 for a new Merc 18 tonne truck .
    The world has gone mad...

A 2019 Nissan Juke was being valued at 7,500 3 months ago is now up at £9800 with we buy any car (I know) .

Now is not the time to be building a patio, with imported Indian sandstone slabs, above which is a softwood gazebo for a gas-fired bbq to go with your new outdoor dining set next to your fire pit feature. I look forward to the fixtures coming out.
