Leicester City management compared to City and Vincent Tan

Congrats to Leicester City for adding an FA Cup trophy to their Premiership title. Success is not limited to the so-called BIg SIX and their absentee landlords.

The celebrations of the Leicester players after their victory deliberately included their chairman who has clearly bonded with players and fans alike. There is something special going on there - in stark contrast to these days of overseas owners and their greed in attempting to form their own league as a money-making exercise which alienated fans and players. And the bond between the chairman's family and club has been strengthened by the genuine outpouring of emotion after that terrible helicopter crash.

How do we think Vincent Tan and his management compares with the Leicester model?

Tan's made some bad decisions based on his own strange-to-us feelings and beliefs. He's taken umbrage at the nasty attacks on him by City fans. He's also been absent from 99% of games over the last few years. But he's also been there at the ground sharing in the success of promotions and has tried to fratenise with fans. Although there is a mixed viewof his support of the club, most balanced fans feel he's been a good owner in terms of the supply of funds. But he is well-short of the adulation and love showered on Aiyawatt 'Top' Srivaddhanaprabha on Saturday.

The only thing these guys have in common is that they're both from the far east. Vincent Tan doesn't love Cardiff City. He doesn't respect Wales, Cardiff, or its people. He doesn't understand what a football club is or what it means. He's just rich. And he hasn't/doesn't even use his wealth wisely. He's a ****ing clown.

When I used to write a weekly column for the Echo a few years back, I can remember getting terrible stick on AnoTHeR board for comparing Cardiff City's ownership pretty unfavourably with Leicester's in one of my pieces. In particular, Leicester had turned their club debt into equity and, despite promises at the time that we would follow suit, nothing had happened. Of course, Vincent Tan has since started the process, but, as far as I'm aware, the major part of the conversion to the sum of £60 to £70 million has still not gone through and, given what we're being told about the impact of the pandemic on Mr Tan's businesses, it seems unlikely that it will happen in the next few years.

Tan has no doubt spent more and achieved far less....his decisions on CEO and mgt

Leicester's recruitment department is, rightly, recognised as being up there with the best and there has been a steady stream of Academy players making the breakthrough into the first team under Brendan Rodgers when they've tended to be in and around the top six of the Premier League (e.g. Chilwell, Barnes, Choudhury and Thomas) - there's two on field reasons why they've completely outperformed us in the last decade despite having been in the third tier since we were last there.

In 2004/05, a season after they were relegated from the Premier League, Leicester finished one place above us in 15th. For the next 9 seasons we finished above them in the football pyramid and beat them in the playoffs, FA cup and League cup. We won the Championship in 2012/13. They won it the season after. We plummeted straight back down. They nearly did but stayed up and won the league a year later.

For around a decade we could claim to have been better than Leicester. How things changed, and rapidly!

A rich foreign owner that cares deeply about the club seems quite rare these days. In fact Tan probably has more in common with other owners than the Leicester owner does.

I'd rather Tan than quite a few of the other owners in this and the other leagues.

Have we ever had an owner who has loved Cardiff City?

Re: Leicester City management compared to City and Vincent Tan

which clubs DO compare well with Leicester though?
why not compare Tan with Blackburn, Swansea or Sunderland?

neither is we had a background in football prior to coming here afaik. so a lot comes down to the trust in the people they've hired.

on the radio yesterday Andy King was saying that a lot can be traced back to Nigel Pearson when they were in league one putting a lot of things in place behind the scenes, improving sports science, the youth setup and recruitment, which has been the foundation they've built upon.

take Neil Warnock for example, when he turned us from a relegation battle to promotion in 18 months Tan clearly would have thought "great I've finally got someone who knows what they're doing". but in reality we were putting nothing in place to maintain the longer term success of the club.
there was no youth progression, chaotic recruitment and promotion has left us in a weaker position.

Im sure those short changed by Leicester will be delighted with their success.

I think most clubs would look at Leicester and think I wish our club was run like that.

No doubt a lot of clubs also wish they had a owner like Tan also. So many owners especially in the championship seems to promise the world and give nothing and them do a runner and leave worse off.

I guess that's the problem with football, the grass always seems to look greener.

Re: Leicester City management compared to City and Vincent Tan

Well, Cardiff's recruitment structure has undergone something of an overhaul over the last 18 months, with a greater emphasis having been placed on driving up the value of the squad by recruiting more talented young players.

The man now tasked with doing that is Kevin Beadell, who Cardiff prised away from Arsenal's under-23s at the start of the season.

Beadell heads the club's recruitment operation now for the under-18s, under-23s and the first team. It is an impressive appointment and one which club insiders have been really pleased with in recent months.

    ...

Since the summer, Cardiff have brought in nine players and only two - Kieffer Moore and Jonny Williams - have been over the age of 25.

Expect that to change slightly this summer, though, with McCarthy himself eager to put his own views forward. He certainly wants a little more experience within the squad, owing to the fact Junior Hoilett will leave and the contract situations of both Joe Bennett and Sol Bamba are up in the air.

    ...

Meanwhile McCarthy, given his wealth of experience and contacts within the game, has a sizeable say on the targets who he likes based on his experiences of coming across them previously or his trusted network of confidants within the game, much like Neil Warnock would do as evidenced by some of his shrewd free transfers while in the Welsh capital.

That hybrid system, the club hope, will stand them in good stead this summer.

Warnock leant on his vast network of former players and staff for recommendations on signing some of those above and that, historically, is how McCarthy works, too.

McCarthy, like Warnock, prefers to bring in players he knows or upon the recommendations of those he trusts. Rather than signing the player who looks good on paper or the fashionable choice, he brings in the right man to fit his system and, ultimately, his vision.

Malky updated us massively after Dave Jones with regards to sports science and transfer identification and Neil Harris's work off the field is going to be remembered far more favourably than work on the field, but most of Tan's spending here has been wasted by short-termism which leaves us very little to show for it.

Transfer windows will need to be judged as a whole rather than on individual signings as it seems Mick is going to make some moves we don't like but, apart from false(?) claim that we prised Kevin Beadell away from Arsenal when other sites make it clear he was moved out before joining us, local press are making positive noises about future plans.

Fans forget how badly our club was run under Hammam . Ridders etc and although Tan is not the perfect owner but he's far better than those leaches.
I'd love Cardiff to be run like Leicester but they are more or less a one off.

They did get a major financial boost by dumping £millions of liabilities when they went into Administration and with no football authority penalties.

Ridsdale is a bit unfairly judged by many in my opinion.

he was always s bit of a figure of fun but I think he did an excellent job here.

he was never the owner, only a chairman, and had to deal with Sam Hammam for all of his time here.
he managed the club through some tricky periods with regards to debt / HMRC etc. Got the stadium built from the starting point of a Sam Hammam crayon drawing and found foreign investment to secure the long term future of the club (it should have done more than that)
he's a bit of an unsung hero in some ways

Seems to me that several posters have short and selective memories - not to mention their agendas.

How could we have forgotten this memorable example of Vincent becoming a veritable pillar of the local community -
