WPWS reshuffle “not on sporting merit”

I confess I have no interest in women’s football but picked this up on my Twitter feed.

3 teams relegated for the good of the game in Wales. The reaction and statements are worth reading. Abergavenny who finished 4th, relegated in favour of a TNS side who don’t exist yet.

The FAW come out of this extremely badly.

That is a disgrace, as is the response of the FAW in saying that the application procedure was "robust" - what the hell does that mean?

I'm not sure Abergavenny will get far talking how they beat our women's team 4-0 though, because every time I see a result of theirs , it strikes me that it's poor for a club of our relative size, the jacks always seem to massacre us.

It’s all relative though TOBW, City are a big fish little pond, looking at available resources, beating a side 4-0 who finished above you is always a scalp.

I wasn't being completely serious Des, but you look at that table and the jacks only conceded one goal all season! You'd expect us to be comfortably second at least in that league, but it looks like, generally speaking, the better women players in the Cardiff area are more likely to play for Cardiff Met.

That's absolutely mental, why are they relegating them?

The baffling thing is that there’s also a Cardiff City Ladies (not Women) team that play in the English set up - 3rd tier.
They used to be affiliated with our club and were allowed to keep the name.
To my mind, we should bring them back into the fold and look to develop women’s football in that set up, where the standard will surely be higher.

Presumably they've seen it be successful across the bridge where the Doncaster Belle's were relegated in favour of Man City(?) women's team.

I felt it was definitely the wrong decision then and I feel the same now. For some of these clubs, it's a very different situation from not having the facilities for top-flight football despite being given the chance to implement that.

One of the other "relegated" teams was my former local Sunday league team, Cascade, and I feel for them. They complied with all the Tier 1 eligibility requirements. It's not a good look for the FAW when they totally overlook sporting merit, especially given what's just gone on with the whole Super League debacle.

The worst part is that there was no transparency to this process - the teams weren't informed why exactly they've been kicked out of the top tier. It seems to me that they've based these decisions on the reputation and merit of the clubs' men's teams, which is ridiculous.

Good call I hadn’t made that link. The Doncaster Belles decision was shocking, especially with their history
