Punk meets metal
The Stranglers had an aggressive, provocative attitude which sort of aligned them to the punk movement, but their music was more complex and polished than your typical punk band of the time.
Clearly influenced by The Doors, they had this distinctive gothic organ sound which sometimes borders on prog rock, fairly lengthy songs with frequent solo breaks.
Looking back now, I think them and Television laid the groundwork for the post-punk scene.
This it for me from them

Shredding that guitar long before acdc came around
I think he's an influential to rock music as iommi from sabbath
Their music transcends genre. But they obviously started off in the London punk scene. They were young. They dressed like punks. The Stranglers were older, more musical and had formed in 74 or 75 I think. What does it matter? I remember reading an interview in one of the music papers where Paul Weller after being asked if the Jam were a mod band said something like "we're a punk band, we came in with it and we're sticking with it". Elizabeth Fraser had a (later removed) "Sid Vicious" tattoo on her arm.
The punk era in my view was a vehicle for new music sound /attitude , a lot of bands developed from that genre the biggest example in my view were the Clash who were an exceptional band . Same with Weller who developed into some many other music genre when you consider his journey from the Jam into the Style Council and finally into his solo career

Loaded is an astonishing album when you consider its release date of 1970 , previous to that they release White light / White Heat in 68 and were playing whatever you want to call it from 1965 , if you look at the charts at that time you quickly realise how progressive , avant-garde , punk attituded , they were ..
Recorded in 1974, proto-punk from Krautrock band Neu!
