There are number of big clubs walking the tightrope at the moment. Buying up all those players on massive contracts was always going to come back and bite you - unless, of course, you have the backing of the Saudis, or some Russian oligarch. It'll be interesting to see if any of them reach the point of collapse. I doubt it.
I used to think they were a well run club mainly owned by supporters. It appears they are paying massive wages though? Like twice what man utd do? How come the even worse financially run club in Real Madrid arent under embargo? Surely their wage bill is higher again?
This is why im surprised the EPL clubs went along with the super league idea. Without it the Spanish duo and Juve will be bankrupt within 2 years, they will be playing in their second tier competitions and will be no competition for the top 6 who will then be able to rule europe.
Always been a financial mess, in 2001 the rumors were similar of bankruptcy, saddled with an army of aging dutch players and struggling to get a regular champions league place. Rivaldo's hatrick against Valencia in the last game of that season secured them that 4th place and they lived to fight another day.
Things had seemed to turn a corner when Laporta was elected and they dodge a bullet when Beckham joined Madrid and they were forced to sign Ronaldinho. Things turned sour again after a very successful spell and it turned out he'd also pissed a lot up the wall, and his right hand man ended up doing a bit of bird.
Saying the club is fan run is same as saying the UK is run by the people. The only ones close to the top are from rich and well established families, many with questionable pasts. Ya man on the street casts a vote and that's about it.
Not mentioned in that thread is also the fact the stadium is run down and in desperate need of a coat of paint (heard that at least 100mm to fix it).
They'll survive, they always do. Think they are looking to borrow of a venture capital group.
Oh and don't get me started on the tax avoidance from the club and its players.

they have been in a mess for years, but they will just continue to borrow more money with the hope the money tree doesnt dry up
It's an arms race between big clubs doing it in a less than tasteful manner whether that's legitimate concerns regarding sportswashing (Chelsea, PSG etc.), the ugly relationship with debt Manchester United have or seizing too great a slice of the commercial pie as Barcelona and Real Madrid have previously enjoyed.
External pressure to compete plus horrific mismanagement has ruined what was a great club.
