    Dutch referee, for Sunday’s final

Can’t say I’ve noticed his matches, so hopefully he’s a no nonsense type of referee

Did Azerbaijan exist as a country in 1966. He was reported as being Russian at the time.

Lazy journalism I s’pose, the country was the USSR, so technically he was from the Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan. Russia was another republic within the regime and as was another region. Similar to calling the the whole of The Netherlands Holland maybe.

I made it four pedants in the thread - the sort of petty people who will insist Gareth Bale is Welsh not English! But who cares?

Russia wasn't just another republic it was the occupying power in all the other republics. Uzbekistan, Khazakstan Azerbaijan and so on. The Eastern European countries were annexed by Russia at the end of the war but the soviet republics long before. Azerbaijan was occupied before the Russian Revolution and only escaped in 1992.

As a matter of interest his name was Tofig Baramov and he was so well respected that the football stadium in Baku before they built the Olympic stadium, was named after him. But not for the world cup but for the good works he did when he retired bringing football to the children in Baku and generally encouraging sport for the masses

    (I'm probably number 5 or 6 now ).

Our republic of Pedantia would have held 2 or 3 games in these Euros had we put our mind to it Why do folk who get things wrong get their arses in their hands when they’re pulled up over spellings, phrases etc in the posts? I’ve dropped loads of bollocks on here and had the piss ripped out of me (Delmi & Heisenberg take a bow) but like in school, you learn and hope you don’t drop that bollock again. Anyway it’s all part of messageboard fun pulling up the ones who fall into the trap of dropping the same bollocks. All the best, a member of the Pedantia committee
