Yeah it was a bit rubbish but there were two spells when we played well and scored. Tomlin when he came on was a class above everybody else on the pitch, although still rusty, of course. Other positives: Bagan was neat and tidy - there was an interesting bit when Pack and I think one other were telling Bagan to pass it backwards but instead he threaded a lovely through ball to Harris who was just offside. Passing forwards - it's the future! Harris seems to do something good one moment and then mess it up, but hopefully again that's rustiness.

We had Taylor Jones on the bench who I thought could play right back/rwb (or am I wrong?) but sent Sam Bowen on to play there instead. Not sure what's going on there; perhaps just giving Bowen some game time.

I preferred to watch the cricket, so can't say much about last night because I've only watched Mick McCarthy and Dillon Phillips' interviews so far. However, hearing our manager say that we probably played better against Cambridge makes me think I've not missed much because we were poor in the first game and not much better than okay in the second one on Saturday.

Hearing the interviewer say Forest Green dominated possession in the first half should be a source of embarrassment to our team given we're two divisions above them, but I don't suppose it will be, because that's what we are and, realistically, it would be asking a bit for Ryan Wintle to come in from Crewe and totally transform a midfield that is one of the worst in the Championship when it comes to ball retention. Indeed, given the players who have left the club and those who have come in so far, it seems reasonable to think that we'll be seeing our team have even less of the ball this season if Mick McCarthy really isn't going to be bringing any one else in.

Mick McCarthy is right to say what he did about the importance of winning, but he says that from the perspective of someone who has been here six months - us supporters have had around a decade now of the team playing a type pf football that has nothing to commend it if the result doesn't go our way. We've had some success during that time of course, but I can't remember the last time I've turned up or tuned in to a game expecting to be entertained - hence my decision to watch a T20 game last night over the City, something I would never have done a few years ago.

As for Bowen at right wing back, I don't get it.

Couple of points about the game which I thought was quite competitive, more so than the earlier friendlies.
Defence was poor at defending crosses which is surprising given our height. Similar to last season.
Mc Guinness getting a lot of game time. Looks like Morrison may not be fit to start season. Big awkward lump of a player. Has a lot to do to get up to Championship standard.
Least said about our MF the better. Collins is
a goalscorer. Welcome addition to the team.
Hope all our missing players get fit soon as we need them.

Since Warnock's days we've become even more direct and 'high ball into the box' orientated. We are unable to start attacks from the back because we don't have a central defender who can pass. We don't really have a Championship quality centre midfield pairing.

I've no doubt City will slowly get their game together in the next month or two, but it's hard to see this squad anywhere mid-table - at best..

The above is a classic example of how to over analyse a pre season friendly behind closed doors where all the squad are looking for is fitness, 5 or 6 of the first team squad (and probably the first team) are missing, the result means nothing and about 10 of the squad are under 23 players. If you want to carry on moaning and help destroy the belief and confidence of these young players then fine but I prefer to wait for the season to start before making any conclusions about how we will play, where we will finish and which players are up to the job.

I always remember a pre season friendly in Cumbernauld, in the 90’s.
There we were going along nicely in the game, when the manager at the time, decided to make several changes. Well as he did, my very good friend who was sat next to me (sadly passed away now), went absolutely bananas.
Started screaming, what did you do that for, we are winning,
Some people just don’t get pre season friendlies and should stay away from them, otherwise they’ll give themselves a heart attack.

One more word on the game in Cumbernauld, it was in the middle of nowhere, no pubs, refreshments anywhere near the ground and the tossers wouldn’t let us in their clubhouse, because we were “CARDIFF CITY FANS”
Talk about reputations going before you !!!!!!!!

How can I over analyse a game I’ve not seen? What I said is based on Mick McCarthy’s post match comments and what the person doing the interviewing asked him.

Am I right to understand Pack has played every pre-season game so far as a CM?

One can over-analyse friendlies of course but Pack at CB (as he was last two competitive games) should allow us more control of the ball and being a new position you'd have thought he'd be given as much experience as possible there.

We're unlikely to get promoted unless we're more comfortable on the ball, Mick appeared to have found something that improves us and now appears to have backed away from it. Any theories as to why?

I guess an experienced head might be helping Wintle settle in as quickly as possible and allowing McGuinness and Brown game time together both would aid us in 2022-2023 when, if we play our cards right, we've got a much better chance of promotion challenge.

I can't remember much about the end of last season so he may have played well but other than being ok on the ball I can't think of many reasons why Pack would be selected at cb.

Surely we have far better options there.

It all comes down to movement for me, our cbs are capable of playing decent short passes to feet if there is movement ahead of them and if they are of course encouraged to do so. Not saying we will be playing it out like the best but these are championship players who should be capable of a simple pass... If the option is available.

You analyse a lot of games, but I had no idea you’d watched any of them.

That makes it worse for me. You have criticised the team, manager and the way we play, said that City are basically unwatchable and given the opinion that we are and will in future carry on playing a certain (unattractive) way, based solely on absolutely nothing other than what you have heard second hand in a tv or radio interview after a meaningless friendly when half the first team weren't even available. If thats not being ‘over analytical’ I don't know what is.

It's been a frustration for me as well. I dont expect our centre backs to be as good on the ball as Beckenbauer, but after doing the good bit of winning the ball, so often it is kicked or headed aimlessly, when there was plenty of time to pick a pass.
It doesn't look as if Pack will be a CB this season, but I hope MM can coach just a tiny bit of football into our defenders.

I think you partially have a good point but can you tell me why it matters if the game was watched or whether comment has been made based on post-match interviews if you think friendlies themselves are meaningless?

Friendlies can suggest to us some things, the Pack at CB experiment seems to have been dropped, and they can be the first hint of how we might play going forward but they will be largely forgotten about come first games of the new season and forgotten completely 11 games in.

Can I ask you why you think it was that Mick McCarthy kept on emphasising that we won despite him stating that we probably played better against Cambridge than we did last night and why did the interviewer bring up our lack of possession in one of his questions? Do you not trust their judgement on those matters? I do and they sound like they are talking about another case, albeit a not too important one, of us “winning ugly” with limited possession - something that we have tended to specialise in for getting on for a decade. Do you see anything in our transfer business so far this summer to suggest we’re going to see a more entertaining style of play from the team in 21/22?

Re: FT: FOREST GREEN 1 - 2 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread

Its difficult to be mega optimistic this season. The teams coming down are pretty the only ones with cash to spend. The rest of us are relying on free transfers and cast offs. Hopefully we have enough to see us mid table.
Whether MM is able to get us playing decent football is a moot point as we have the core of the team from last season.
