Thread: Ruskies at the Olympics

  1. #1

    Ruskies at the Olympics

    Competing as "Russian Olympic Committee"
Russia was banned, basically caught cheating, so why is this allowed?
    Taking the piss, IMO.

    I agree.

    Re: Ruskies at the Olympics

Could be wrong but I think they are athletes who are outside of the state sponsored doping regime.
    Still doesn't seem right though

    Re: Ruskies at the Olympics

A few presenters slipping up and accidentally calling them Russia... should be named "Olympic Committee Team" only.

On the plus side, a few BBC presenters/commentators are calling it Team GB and Northern Ireland which finally recognises and accurate full title.

    Re: Ruskies at the Olympics

Was thinking this earlier, everyone knows it's Russia, they even wear the colours. No problem with clean athletes competing but if banning "Russia" there shouldn't really be anything connecting or identifying them as Russian apart from their surnames.

Situation as it is now they may as well just let them use the flag.

Why it’s never been “Team UK” (or just the “United Kingdom”) is beyond me.

Who would Mark Cavendish represent if it was Team UK?

The UK as is the case now? I’d argue styling it as “Team UK” makes more sense for the inclusion of NI, crown dependencies, overseas territories, etc. than “Team GB” does.

    Re: Ruskies at the Olympics

I have mixed feelings on this
On one hand if it's a ban then they should all be banned
On the other hand why should someone who is clean pay the price for others.
Take the NML ban for drugs
I'm pretty sure we would have been kicking off if the whole squad had also been banned as a result of his actions.

Putin is probably peeved that the flag is absent.

I tend to agree. Both aren't perfect though.
Why not just go back to calling it Great Britain and Northern Ireland? Drop the Team thingy altogether.

    I'm with you on this.

It only started creeping into use (I think) with "Team Sky" cycling.

Quite a few Manx Olympians over the years, most recently Cycling, Yak won a gold & Cav a Silver in Rio. Historically shooting & walking have had strong Manx representation. It says British Islands, Isle of Man on their passports. With regards to representation, my kids could choose to represent the Island, Wales, Ireland or England if they wanted, based on Grandparents.

Pity there are no spectators. They could have used the carried on as Russia and got the full treatment from the onlookers. I'm sure Putin wouldn't have enjoyed that.

As the situation is, it's like someone getting sent off and coming back on as a sub with a different name on the back of their shirt. I wonder if anyone's ever tried to pull that one?

Did athletes declare they were in the official Russia doping regime?

    Re: Ruskies at the Olympics

It worked better in the rio games, under the " independent athletes " banner , the Russians had to be training outside Russia and prove they were drug free

    Re: Ruskies at the Olympics

    Other athletes are complaining now.

Only the ones with no hair on the back of their hands are allowed to participate.
