    Good effort

I remember English lads at work taking the piss out of welsh place names before so after that I'd start to notice the names of places we drive through up in England and I've got to be honest they lose this battle by a landslide they've got some ridiculously named Little villages etc. Curry Mallet and brown willy ring a bell down south and Barton in the beans up north as standout names I've come across.

Kaka obviously a nickname for Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite
Same for Chicarito, not really unusual as nicknames often are.

As a kid I always wanted to change my name to that of an obscure Swedish footballer as his name sounded so 'cool': Kurt Axelsson.

And who remembers football commentators pronouncing Mike Trebilcock's name as Mike Trebilco in the sixties?

He was a colleague of mine here in Taunton (although I can't say I knew him well and only had a few passing conversations with him).

I always loved Jan V's name but never checked out it's derivation until now.

Apparently back in the 17th century two Dutch families, the Vennegoors and Hesselinks intermarried and because they both had the same social standing they kept both names from there on. The Dutch word for 'or' is 'of', so if we were to Anglicise his name it would be Jan Vennegoor or Hesselink.

Surprised that nobody's mentioned Max Power.

I remember Miuke 'Trebilco', I am not sure it but it probably is the right pronunciation. A bit like the planet Ur****, such a shame there's not a player with that name.

I also recall Steve Death but was told it was pronounced 'D Ath'.

Edit: I did type the name of the planet, but it auto corrected it!

The name originates from Cornwall and the Cornish pronunciation of the 'ck' ending is the same as in English, I believe.

Of course, he played for Taunton Town at the end of his career. It couldn't happen these days but Gerry Cakebread played the best part of 350 games in goals for Brentford whilst only being a part timer. He was succeeded in goal for Brentford by Chic Brodie whose first class career was ended sadly with this incredible tackle.
