Thread: Phillips & Nelson

    Phillips & Nelson

Hate to single out players as all were terrible

Understand need to bring players through but when we’re dropping like a stone we need our best team out sometimes. That’s smithies (by far)

As for Nelson, one of the main culprits of our panic football. McGuinness looks a far better player.

    Both need dropping

Nelson has the look of a rabbit caught in the headlights of an oncoming car whenever he's in possession of the ball.
To say he's a limited player is an understatement.. League One player at best!

They will all be league one players soon.

    Re: Phillips & Nelson

I can only assume Smithies is on big appearance money in his contract as there is no other reason why Phillips shouldn’t be taken out of the firing line at the moment.

I think it's more that Phillips will be the number one next season, as smithies will be off, so we need to bring him through ready for that.

    Nelson is a shocking defender.

Absolutely limited and has no ability to play a pass. Hopeful diagonals or lashed up field every time.

If only we had another couple of Centre halves on the bench everything would have been fine.
Surprised really Micky no plan didn't play Smithies and Phillips together, maybe that's the way forward for Saturday?

On a serious note Phillips, Nelson, Brown Vaulks and Bacuna are clearly not good enough
Morrison looks disinterested, as do a number of the senior players
Maybe they all know they won't have their current lucrative contracts renewed? Or their looking at Mad Mick in training and wondering how he got the gig?

Whatever it is something definitely isn't right and I can't see McCarthy being here after the weekend

He was our best defender at times last season

I think both are ok squad players.

Smithies has to start Saturday. Mcguiness needs to take 1 of the centre half spots. Not sure which one id leave out.

I would go McGuiness - Flint - Brown

Brown should be no-where near, ever wearing a Cardiff City shirt again.

    Re: Phillips & Nelson

Nothing wrong with Brown, apart from the fact, that he can't trap a ball, pass the ball straight head the ball properly or position himself to put the attacking forward on the wrong foot.
He's nailed on starter for Mick as he can hoof it with the best of them

Yup, but I suppose it depends on what we want our defenders to do. When they're on form, every one of them is good at stopping the opposition, but that's what they should be good at, it's the minimum requirement for a defender. Stopping other players is much easier than showing a bit of control, balance, intelligence on the ball etc. Evidence for that is the fact that Robbie savage made a top flight career out of it, although he had the luxury of being able to give the ball to players who could create.

The problems kick in when our defenders have to think, are given time on the ball. They will give it straight back or end up in a compromised position. In fairness though, they have little option in midfield.

Teams have sussed us, let our back 9 have the ball, they will give it back after the second or third move because they are so limited and have no options. What a luxury for the opposition, a manager, set of players and tactics that work for them! It's pretty simple, let Cardiff hang themselves, don't play their physical game, don't go chasing the ball. Chances will arise simply due to us having the ball. The worst thing for us is anything over 40% possession. That's how Intrinsic our anti football style of play is.

You would play Brown. What the hell have you seen in him that makes you think that's a good idea?

Think that last sentence is a little unfair. Vaulks is a headless chicken that makes Harry Arter look composed, and Bacuna is Bacuna, but Pack, Ralls and Bowen (when he plays) all regularly show for the ball and come deep. They just get completely chinned off because Flint has spotted a ball on in the sixth row of the stand (or because Mick has told them to launch it whenever they have it).

He shouldn't play centre back because he was bad playing at LWB?

He was out of position to be fair to him where the others are in a more natural place and still looked as bad

Na, he's just shite where ever he plays.

He can't turn, can't run, he can't even launch the ball forward.

Also noticed he was consistently beaten in the air by the smaller player last night so his athletic ability is questionable too

It's an all time low when all the opposition have to do is keep their shape and wait for the ball to come back to them, they don't even have to press. We are ****ed. Last season, teams decided to get at us and press higher-up. Not now. They don't have to.

    Re: Phillips & Nelson

Cant blame the players when played out of position by their useless manager and told to hoof the ball whenever possible to our best player who sat on the bench.

    McCarthy out
