No one HAS to give up. They make a choice. Some people can't or won't stop. Anyone that has a problem and comes out the other side having changed their life deserves respect. And some encouragement. Whether it's alcohol, drugs, gambling, spending, being in an abusive relationship or whatever. Don't be a dick.
