O/T Best family car recommendation around 7K

    Hi all,

My son has had two Ford Focus's and, I understand, that the late models are not up to the standard of the older ones.

Could you please recommend a car for a family of four (six and four year old) with a good size boot.

    Thanks.

I always buy Ford or Vauxhall

    Cheap generic parts

Workhorse engines I believe , I am no expert

I am not one for fashion or comfort

I am currently driving a Ford Cmax , it's fine

My son's Focus has been faultless over the last 6 years, 1.6 petrol, cost virtually zero on parts (other than brakes, tyres and belts). Similarly my wife's Zafira has gone from 60k to 135k with no issues, it's s 1.8 petrol and good on fuel too. The sliding/folding seats make life easier as well 👍

Skoda Octavia - massive boot and loads of space.

My Astra estate lasted for years , this Cmax is going strong

    Regular service

If its got to 135 k without too much hassle you could get another 4 years out of that ?

Toyota Corolla Verso. Our last two family cars have been these and will probably buy again when I'm due to change. Fantastically versatile MPV with 2 extra seats in the boot should you need. Reliable and relatively cheap to maintain, owned 2 of these over 14ish years and never an issue.

Depends what sort of age vehicle you want. Used cars are expensive at the moment, and you might have to buy 'old' to get the likes of a Golf or an Audi. Skoda, Kia or Hyundai are do-able, in the 'last few years' bracket. Skoda is a very good buy, once you get past the jokes.

I find the boot of a golf very small compared to a mondeo for example if looking at family cars.

This isn’t my experience. My current Focus is 17 reg, which I’ve owned from new. The previous one was a 14 reg. Both have served me well. Would be interested to hear how new ones don’t match older ones.

Its a bit of snobbery really.
A bit like owners of original Mini's or Beetle's not fully embracing the newer versions whether they're better cars or not 🙂

Go for a Kia or a Hyundai, lowest miles with service history .
    Great cars .
Vauxhall and fords are ok but when they start to go wrong they go wrong .
Great cars for the garage owner.
    VW and Audi
Good cars but probably looking at a lot older with your budget .
    Good cars .

As someone has stated used cars values are through the roof at the moment , If you can hang on I would . They will drop down .

    Hi Jimmy

Off topic for this thread, but as you are around, what is your opinion of the Peugeot 5008,specifically the 1.2 puretech petrol

I did put up a thread about it when I ordered it back in May, so I suppose it is a bit immaterial now but I would be interested to know your views. Des Parrot seems to think it is a good car, but I know opinions on Peugeots vary.

It has actually arrived after a bit of a delay and I am picking it up on Wednesday from Griffin Mill in Upper Boat. It is a Motability car (couldn't have afforded it otherwise!) so as long as it last 3 years I am not too worried about long term reliability problems.
