Ruby Turner is excellent. First saw her at uni about 30 years ago. She's a regular now I think with Jools Holland.

Bob I thought I was a lone voice! I was a Judie groupie from 79 to 82. What a great time. Then I transferred allegiance to Randy Crawford

Yes, but she always seems to be billed as a "special guest" rather than a member of the band.

Thought I'd add some thoughts arising from a coupla posts on this thread.

Female 'screamers/screechers'. I like Tina Tuner (saw her at the Millennium Stadium as it was then called), but there's only so much of her voice I can take at a time.
Felt the same way about Sam Brown. She is the daughter of Joe and former Vernons Girl, Vicki Haseman (a stunning-looking lady who had a successful career in Europe). Sam was a essentially a backing singer. You would have seen her during the Concert for George (Harrison) and several Hootenannys. She was also the resident singer with Jools Holland's R&B Orchestra for several years - and then her place was taken by Ruby Turner, a hot gospel vocalist/bit-part actor who has been mentioned here. Turner presented a documentary Shout Sister Shout about Sister Rosetta Tharpe for BBC Radio.
Sam could belt out a song with the best of them - but after a while, for me her voice was a little jarring.
Sad to say, from 2007 she could no longer sing - being unable to hold a note.

    Sam in fine form: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACFl...eeFHiDefVideos

Always thought that Ellie Goulding has a great voice, as does Joss Stone. Denise Johnson, who sang on Screamadelica, also had a fantastic voice.

Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday for me.

Showing my age now! This song immediately transports me back to the 60's and my student days in London. She had a beautiful voice indeed.

For my second choice I think it would be Karen Carpenter.
