Thread: VR - Any advice?

    VR - Any advice?

I'm not into gaming but would love to be able to wander around places like Machu Picchu.

I've noticed the Quest 2 advert on TV, but really don't know what I'm looking for.

Can anyone provide any advice or guidance?

The Quest 2 is a really well-priced piece of kit. I have one. It's easy to set up and you can use it without the need to be tethered to a PC but you can if you want to. I'm a big fan of VR and its potential. I was put off for a long time because it's owned by Facebook and I've never had an account but you need one to set up the Quest 2. I just set one up in the end and turned off everything I could and never use it other than to sign into the headset.

Other brands are expensive and require more room, light, and sensors.

Once you've experienced VR you'll be blown away. Resolution is not as good as a 4K monitor or TV so don't expect that level but if you set it up for your eyes/head it's really good. I use it for Sim Racing and it's incredible because you can turn your head left or right and see cars alongside. Using wing mirrors is easier too.

There are some great games out there but there is also a lot of rubbish.

Virtual tours and exploration are fantastic. Visiting galleries etc. There's a lot on Firefox and Youtube.

The biggest use for me is as a virtual desktop for my PCs and Macs whilst testing out 3D animations I'm developing. Creating VR animations is something I'm doing more and more of.

I'd say go for it but budget for a few things like always go for the biggest storage model you can afford. Nobody ever says 'my SSD is too big'. With the Oculus Quest 2, budget for the elite head strap (which comes separately), you won't regret it. For PC tethering, don't buy the Oculus link cable, it's vastly overpriced, just buy a non-branded one from Amazon.

Any other questions, I'll help if I can.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I found the information you've provided very helpful. I didn't even realise that there are VR videos on Youtube. I'll take your advice and get the elite head strap too. Now that my wife and I are almost housebound it will be nice to revisit some of the places we visited on holiday and see some of the places we never managed to get to.

You're welcome. If you send a friend request I'll add you and you can always PM me if you've got any questions or set-up issues. I'll help wherever I can.

The videos etc. can be in different forms. There's full 360 degrees, 180, and what I'll describe as 3D where an animation can 'pop' out of a 3D background and look solid. It's hard to describe but if you've ever watched a movie in 3D or played a video game using the glasses you'll probably know what I mean.

Just to add, you set up the headset from the Oculus app on your phone. You also need to be connected online.

Had a go of one of these a few weeks ago, almost took the plunge for the kids but holding off for now although I’m sure they would love flying around like iron man. The walk the plank game off the top of a sky scraper was quite surreal, I don’t do heights but I couldn’t walk to the end of the plank despite the fact I knew I was on my mates kitchen floor…..

I’ve seen it on old pillar boxes

They are being used as aversion therapies which is quite interesting. The plank scenario freaked Mrs C out! How I laughed!

Facebook are making huge investments in this at the moment, you may want to hang on to see what gets released in the coming months.

They have been taking on loads of engineers and talking about "Retina" resolution

It's true, there will be massive changes. But 'Beyond Zuckerberg’s vague “retina” comment, there are basically no details on what kind of headsets they are, what they’re capable of, or even if they’re just nonfunctional design mock-ups'. is the key quote for me at the moment. I'd say VR is a 'wow' enough experience to be an early adopter knowing full well that over the next 10 years it will be very different. Even the headsets will become different. If Apple go VR like they're supposed to then you can 'virtually' guarantee the headsets will be awesome designs....but very expensive.

There are also massive problems with the large-scale production of all tech right now. Global shortages of key components. Try buying an Xbox Series X or PS5. I've been on a six-month waiting list for a Steam hand-held PC console. I think March is the earliest now but the dates keep changing.
