Sheffield Wednesday face stiff competition to land highly-rated Brighton and Hove Albion youngster Haydon Roberts.
As exclusively revealed by Yorkshire Live, the Owls have spoken to the Premier League club about taking Roberts on loan for the rest of the season.
It is believed the Seagulls are open to letting Roberts, a left-footed centre back, leave on a temporary basis following their FA Cup third round clash against West Bromwich Albion this weekend.
Wednesday have done their due diligence on Roberts and see him as someone who solve their defensive shortage.
But Yorkshire Live understands Championship club Cardiff City are also eyeing up a move for the 19-year-old. The Bluebirds are targeting defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window.
Fulham's Cyrus Christie, Zulte Waregem's Cameron Humphreys-Grant and Huddersfield Town's Rarmani Edmonds-Green have also been touted as possible transfer targets for Cardiff.
Only relegation rivals Peterborough United have conceded more goals than the Bluebirds (43) this term.
Roberts, who spent time developing under former Owl Brian Barry-Murphy on loan at Rochdale last year, has previously been linked with Swansea City and Nottingham Forest.
The former England youth international is highly-regarded by Seagulls boss Graham Potter and has regularly trained with their first-team this season.
“He is young and he has got a lot to learn but he has got some really interesting attributes. Very strong, very quick, very mobile.
“He’s powerful. Good with the ball, brings it out well. He’s got good courage so he’s got a lot of things that are really exciting. He has got attributes that can play in the Premier League.
“We need to help him get better. Help him understand a bit more about what we are trying to do.”
Potter said: “He’s a really exciting player.

looks like he started off as a first team regular, but as the season wore on at rochdale he progressed to the bench and then was left out altogether for the run in.

He's important to have in the side at the moment doe to his pace, but he's not comfortable on the ball.
by the summer though we could have a different manager with an entirely different approach so he could still be of some use.
