Yes, safe parking on the fishing side.
Two nice pubs in the village Red Cow and Butchers. Nice home cooked meals.
I thought Llywn On reservoir would have been more up your street
Jesus H. Christ! Somehow you've guided the discussion towards golden showers.
I've said it before, but it needs repeating, you could lower the tone inside a Turkish knocking shop.
And very likely already have.
In Pontsticill the fishing bank is the sailing club side (I think).
Try the postcode CF48 2UR, there's parking allowed on the road before you get to the Mountain railway station, although there's usually anglers on the trail as it were. Lovely part of the world, very chilled.
What's the Butchers Arms like these days?
Do they still have accommodation?
Lovely part of the world.
Yes, since Bike Park Wales come to the town, and with mountain biking, trail running, hiking, etc really taking off this last decade the Merthyr area in gerneral has had a bit of a tourist renaissance. Butchers were one of the first to really cash in on the bunk houses to accomodate the bikers.
Both pubs are nice, I prefer the Red Cow, its not as cramped as the Butchers. Come the summer though very, very busy, get a quieter pint in the Butchers.
I'm assuming anglers go both sides.
I've used Pontsticill and Dolygaer reservoirs for trail running. Lovely views when you go up on the trails surrounding both reservoirs. Also a decent walk/trot to Talybont reservoir if I'm feeling particularly fit.
All on the doorstep butt.
Gets a bad press Merthyr by some but where else could you see beautiful nature and then score heroin within 5 minutes.
Something for everyone.
They should use that as a tourist slogan.
I never fully appreciated how close we live to such beauty until lockdown and started walking the local rivers and reservoirs. I like the forestry trail loop just up from the Red Cow. Once you go over the bridge and walk up the hill to the the top so your overlooking the Ponsticill Reservoir, theres not many better views. I walked it last summer, it was a beautiful sunny day, the trees were reflecting off the water and the steam train was running and you could have literally been anywhere in the world. Looked like something youd see in Canada or Colorado not 5 miles from the Gurnos.
