Try the postcode CF48 2UR, there's parking allowed on the road before you get to the Mountain railway station, although there's usually anglers on the trail as it were. Lovely part of the world, very chilled.
Didnt realise that, thought it was over by the car park on the other side where the ice cream van used to park. See people over there fishing sometimes.

I'm assuming anglers go both sides.

I've used Pontsticill and Dolygaer reservoirs for trail running. Lovely views when you go up on the trails surrounding both reservoirs. Also a decent walk/trot to Talybont reservoir if I'm feeling particularly fit.

    All on the doorstep butt.

Gets a bad press Merthyr by some but where else could you see beautiful nature and then score heroin within 5 minutes.

    Something for everyone.

They should use that as a tourist slogan.

I never fully appreciated how close we live to such beauty until lockdown and started walking the local rivers and reservoirs. I like the forestry trail loop just up from the Red Cow. Once you go over the bridge and walk up the hill to the the top so your overlooking the Ponsticill Reservoir, theres not many better views. I walked it last summer, it was a beautiful sunny day, the trees were reflecting off the water and the steam train was running and you could have literally been anywhere in the world. Looked like something youd see in Canada or Colorado not 5 miles from the Gurnos.

Yes, since Bike Park Wales come to the town, and with mountain biking, trail running, hiking, etc really taking off this last decade the Merthyr area in gerneral has had a bit of a tourist renaissance. Butchers were one of the first to really cash in on the bunk houses to accomodate the bikers.

Both pubs are nice, I prefer the Red Cow, its not as cramped as the Butchers. Come the summer though very, very busy, get a quieter pint in the Butchers.

Yeah, I spent a lot of time up the Upper Neuadd last summer. The dam is very impressive. Too many f*cking sheep around there though.

What tunnel? The one on the Taff Trail heading towards Ponsticill Res?

I remember that view, cycled down route 8 from north wales about 10 yrs ago, cuts right through some beautiful places and old roads.
Then you cut in to Gurnos….. a wake up call

Yeah that’s the Miler. 1 mile tunnel from Pant to Pontsarn. They’ve blocked it up now.

I like walking through the Gurnos after walking down from the res / Morlais castle. I walk past my old house when I was a kid and remind myself life ain’t that bad and there’s always some other poor ****er worse off.

It’s fenced off and blocked up the Pant end you can’t walk through it from one end to the other anymore. Has been for years, my daughters went to the primary school next door to the Pant entrance, they put metal railings up to stop people entering. It was blocked up Pontsarn end too but some nosey bastards like you probably took the metal sheeting off the entrance

I walked from one end to the other and both entrances were open although outside the other entrance was knee deep water and junk

There is a steel fence metal surrounding the area to other entrance (Pant) to stop stolen cars from being dumped there. Both entrances were blocked with metal sheeting, they’ve obviously been vandalised to gain access again.

The opposite entrance has big rocks in front of the entrance but it's overgrown with trees so didn't see a fence..
Pretty decent inside it's flat and no litter.
Theres another tunnel in Torpantau aswell?

Fence is about 50-75 yards away up by the school. I’ll take a photo for you tomorrow if you like

Not sure about the Torpantau tunnel. I only been up there once when I had a very brief dalliance with mountain biking.

There was water, trees and old junk which must have been between the entrance and the fence?
