Almost like they have no intention of doing anything and it is just a buzzword? Not like the Tories...

Very interesting piece of work that is - cheers for posting.

Some of the stats are a little tricky to interpret and curiously laid out but it is very thorough

There is so much to do.

I get the impression that the government will deem levelling up a success if they upgrade a few railway lines oop north.

it isn't easy, projects in London are always going to be more tempting, as the additional money and population there mean that the payback is always better than elsewhere.
the government needs a real desire and to look beyond that and focus on projects that will encourage levelling up, but I don't think they have the will to do.it beyond some empty platitudes

A good question, one of Johnson’s meaningless slogans it would appear- as in “world beating”, “moonshot” etc. etc.

The intention is an honourable one, but “levelling up” was always going to be too much like hard work for this Prime Minister.

its a flagship policy of the current UK government that aims to reduce the economic and social imbalances in the UK. Thus far its been a lot of rhetoric and political bluster from the Tories rather than any concrete action that will make a difference. Whilst billions are spent on crossrail, there's nothing in the pot to take HS2 to Leeds.

I heard somewhere last week that only around 30% or so of applications by LAs had been successful. not only that, but the levelling up fund is around £1.5bn. That's not going to dent decades of under investment in the regions outwith London and the SouthEast.

It was a promise at the last general election to make huge investment in the North of the country to address the economic imbalance.
The results were the destruction of the red wall, a big Tory majority and not that much investment.
