They were unlike so many modern day backs who try to steamroller their way through the opposition.
Those classy players back then, none seemed to be big blokes did they? All quite slight, jpr Williams, Barry john, Phil Bennett, all really skillfull instead…

Actually, JPR was quite a strong guy. He could have easily played centre instead of full-back.
Perhaps you were thinking of JJ Williams?

I reckon JPR would have made a good flanker as well.

Didn't he pack down with his home club? And following from another thread, he beat David Lloyd to become British junior tennis champion.

Yeah that’s the one, JPR was a decent tennis player too, he played in the Wales team with my old man…he doesn’t look to big in the photo I’ve got of them together though…

I spoke to Gareth Edwards at length a while ago, and he told me that he was shouting at Phil Bennett to kick the ball into touch, just before his sidesteps which started the move for the best try ever scored by Gareth Edwards himself. I’m glad that Bennett took the law into his own hands and played by instinct. The rest is history.,,.

Benny shone in an amateur era with his superb side steps and jinking runs, and physical size didn’t matter. Sleep tight Phil bach, we shall not see his like again.

One thing I would say is that Phil Bennett would undoubtedly have been a success in todays modern game. Of that there is no doubt. If you’ve got, you’ve got it. How Wales could have done with him in todays team.
