Parachute payments and the 'yo-yo' club phenomenon between the Premier League and Championship

"It could be argued we have a 24 or 25-club Premier League and some of them are just taking a holiday in the Championship".

"The 'big six' in the Premier League earn on average three times the revenue of the other 14. The other 14 clubs in the Premier League earn roughly three times the revenue of clubs who get parachute payments. The clubs who get parachute payments get three times the revenue, on average, of the other clubs in the Championship. The other Championship clubs get approximately three times the revenue of the clubs in League One."

Currently, a club relegated from the Premiership receives £91m spread over three seasons at a reducing rate (£41m, £34m and £16m). Although City didn't receive as much as that twice, the fact that we didn't bounce back post Warnock is perhaps an indictment of how poor the choice of managers and the recruitment of players has been. While not guaranteeing promotion, City's parachute payments should have tipped the scales substantially in our favour.

Since the 2017/18 season and including next season, 29 different clubs will have played in the PL. Since the 2019/20 season and including next season, 25 different clubs will have played in the PL. In all of the last 4 seasons 2 of the promoted sides have had very recent seasons in the PL.
