No I know that, but I mean it points to something that is not entirely a practical pursuit - like a coffee shop in a town centre is there for people who are shopping as a leisure pursuit, so too does a cafe in a supermarket.

I just think we all benefit from human social interaction and we risk endlessly reducing these at our peril.

I think people should limit their human interactions to arguing on message boards.

It has to be sensible technology advancements though. Also, there's a good argument to say that life my be worst now than in the past. This slavish devotion to progression is robbing us of tradition and what is important.

I think that the last two years have shown some of us that we need to spend more time with other people and/or nature rather than be obsessed with 'stuff' and being stuck on a hamster wheel, if at all possible. 'Tradition' is a moving feast and not all tradition is good. Religion, royalty and being caned regularly at school were traditions when I was a kid. As individuals, we should decide what is important ourselves and perhaps we should be out there spreading the love to all and sundry rather than typing away on CCMB*

I visited a Tesco Extra last week and immediately noticed the self-service area had been massively expanded while tills with humanoids checking out had shrunk to six.

This is the type of 'progress' that'll see us eating grasshopper sandwiches served by robots.

But why should supermarkets fill the human void? Why not go down to your local tyrefitter for a natter? Or call up an electrician? Or pop around to the nearest accountant for a chinwag?

I am genuinely confused about this post, and many other in this thread.

The issue is not about having more humans at check out tills so customers can have a natter. It's not about the value of human contact and resisting technology. The petition was about asking Tesco to backtrack a bit and have more staffed checkouts and fewer self service - with the direction of travel being all self-service. This was because Pat argued many older or disable people (customers in Tesco speak) cannot cope without human help and assistance. It was about shifting the balance back towards people. Although I'm sure a natter while trying to scan a digital club card would be welcome!

For me the thread quite rightly expanded into the bigger issue of automation v profit v jobs a popular socialist argument , as a society we are walking into a world where these traditional jobs that youngsters would take up , as a first step on the earnings ladder , I am also shocked at those who fear identity cards are happy to won club cards are other tagged identity items .

Automation is going to come to more and more walks of life in the coming decades, so governments need to find a way to ensure that the benefits are shared by ALL and not just those at the top.

We can't just let it mean greater profits for mega corporations, that they squirrel away into some tax haven. Im not against automation at all, but it should be to the benefit of everyone.

What if we get to the point that all driving is automated, all shops can run without any staff, Doctors, Surgeons, and so many other walks of life no longer need the same level of human input?

On the other hand, many employers are scratching around for workers in lower paid jobs and we moan when announcements are made regarding problems due to staff shortages and illness. As for the comment "I love chatting with the staff, albeit briefly, especially as l live on my own. Talking with human staff is important to me. Now that experience has been taken away": one can sympathise but supermarkets are not part of social services.
I have just come back from Asda where there about 30 tills on the go. Had most of them (rather than few of them) been manned, it would represent a financial burden to the employer (which would affect prices, no doubt) and I doubt that they could man 30 tills with staff on a Tuesday morning even if they wanted to.

Was there a need for thirty tills on a Tuesday morning?
