    David Bomber Pearce ......Newports Rocky

    This documentary looks interesting

Why does Cardiff and Newport have such a tradition of boxing ?

    Is it the docks ?

I mean you don't hear of many boxers from Coventry or Stoke ?

Heavyweight, wasn't he? Wales has had something like 11 world boxing champions, 2 or 3 from merthyr alone. That's incredible given the population size.

They said he was kept away from Bruno because he would have floored him

I dont think Cardiff and Newport have a bigger boxing tradition than other cities.

Merthyr in particular and the Valleys definitely.

He was a cruiserweight, at the time the bbboc didn't recognise the cruiserweight division, so it made it difficult for him to fight for a world title. The states recognised the weight limit.

He'd have sunk Bruno for sure. Hell of a heavy handed fighter. Shame his career went the way it did but it was clearly the right decision to refuse him a license. Shame he lost his health and life the way he did.
Not a bad career for a cruiser and would have smashed bigger heavyweights had he had the chance!

Yes when was being interviewed and he was saying he would know if there was something wrong and was trying to overturn the consultants decision was a bit worrying

He was a right lump though and looked like a backstreet scrapper

It was a hard watch was that. On one hand you really feel for him, it is his life after all and he would have felt he was denied opportunities. Given how long he ultimately had as well, part of you thinks why not just let him get on with it.
The bbbofc rep was absolutely right though ultimately, it is of course their directive to put these guys health first after all.
Good little documentary, didn't realise how good he really was but he looked very dangerous indeed prior to that European fight.

I wouldn't have wanted to have been greeted by him being a Cardiff coming off the train

    I wouldn't know nowadays.
It used to be a melting pot of people from everywhere really.
I went to a few Blues Parties down there in the early 90s which were a right eye opener for me.
