It's happened 4 times in our history. Our promotion season under Warnock was the last and only time we won promotion under such circumstances.
For me it means that three other Championship teams have the same striking problems that we have - and Watters and Etete were woefully inadequate tonight. (Etete was breathing hard after only around fifteen minutes of coming on and seemed unfit.)
Interesting that you refer to Warnock. He said that a certain number of clean sheets (fourteen??) was necessary for promotion.
It's points that get you promotion, not clean sheets. You can have all the clean sheets possible but 0-0 draws won't be enough to get you up if you can't score.
2 points a game average is the aim, that should get you a crack at promotion and at least into the play-offs.
The teams we've played so far, aside from Reading, have all under-performed. As someone else mentioned, they seem to be having similar problems scoring goals.
Not to take the shine off things, but I think we've been a bit lucky.
We desperately need a quality striker, but by the looks of it... So does everyone else!
It means that 2 centre backs and 2 full backs is better than 5 centre backs.
Top 15 clean sheet percentages - 9 promotions
Bottom 80 clean sheet percentages - 4 promotions
There are 3 seasons in the top 15 for clean sheet percentages that resulted in disappointing finishes, mainly because of problems scoring goals, but far more often than not, clean sheets provide a better platform for scoring goals, winning matches and promotions. We've had 13 promotions. Only 4 of them have had semi-disappointing defensive records.
Could there not be the remotest possibility that the reason that the three teams you refer to have under performed is because of the fact that City have played well and not allowed them to ‘perform’. Plus every team needs a certain amount of luck during the season, especially in the Championship. Just throwing these ideas out there. Don't want to upset your applecart and spoil your negativity.
