Is it just me, or does it seem like our recruitment has been getting better over the last few years?
It seems like there has been a lot more hit than miss recently, and I don't think we can lay all of the praise at the feet of Steve Morison, as I think the improvement in this area predates him, and several of his signings (Collins, Simpson etc) we were apparently interested in before Morison was appointed.
We used to be seemingly very reliant on the manager, whereas in more recent times we've seen the club overrule the manager on a player (Marley Watkins) I don't think that would have happened under Warnock for example.
Over the last few seasons our signings have been:
22/23
Etete, Tanner, Daley-Campbell, Simpson, Rinomhota, Allsop, Romeo, Ojo, Sawyers, Alnwick, O'Dowda, Adams, Collins, Kipre, Philogene.
Too early to tell whether they will ultimately be judged as good signings, but the majority on a free or very cheap and initial looks seem hopeful
21/22
James Collins - didn't really work out, but was a free
Wintle - Good signing
McGuiness - decent signing for a low fee - still potential to make an impact
Then the loanees
Giles, Drameh, Doyle, Doughty, Hugill and Ikpeazu all of whom made a positive impact
I make that 7 good, 1 bad and 1 TBC
20/21
Moore - Top signing, especially for the money
Wilson - Top signing, probably an expensive loan fee though
Ng - Good signing, low fee
Phillips - Free signing, won the #1 jersey for a while but not outstanding
Benkovic - bad signing
Watters - low fee, could still potentially prove to be a good signing
Jonny Williams - Why?
Ojo - Loan - good
Osei-tutu - unfortunate with injury
I make that 4 good, 2 bad, 1 meh, 1 TBC
Compare those with the years before that we have :
19/20
Glatzel - Bad for the money we paid
Flint - did well for us, but we paid £4m
Vaulks - average player, we paid £2m
Vassell - waste of £2m
Whyte - Has not justified the fee.
Pack - OK
Nelson - Free transfer, did well at times.
Hopefully we haven't just had a few luckier transfer windows and we actually have a better process in place these days.
It really started to improve once Warnock was gone, didn't we completely change the recruitment setup at the club?
