    England v South Africa

Caught an hour or so before lunch before popping out. Just got back and totally puzzled why I couldn't find anything on SKY - seemed to be highlights of another game or something. Wow !

Bazballs’ limitations were somewhat exposed over the past three days - they need to get Crawley out of the team, it’s doing him more harm than good now to keep picking him.

Caught the period after lunch which seems like the best session of the lot.

Embarrassing loss even by the end of the Joe Root captaincy period's standards.
All over in less than seven sessions

The Test renaissance under Stokes looks like it's spent already

Just a blip. They’ll be back.

Didn't they say in the NZ series that defeats are part of the new regime and they won't affect the way they play.
Easy to say when you're winning though.

Bazball ! England thought they'd re-written cricket history and found the magic formula which no-one else had thought of in the last 120 years. Maybe they should temper it a bit and go for the batting policy of the great Australian side[s] of the '90's which set out to score at a run rate of 4 per over.

This team is lacking a decent fast bowler and the top order is county standard.

It sure is. Between them, Lees, Crawley and Pope have scored 790 runs - Pope has nearly half of them. An average of 79 for the combined top 3 is pretty average. In England's first innings this summer, the three opening batsmen have averaged 83 between them - the last 5 have averaged 72. Root/Bairstow/Stokes have averaged 124.

Root/Bairstow/Stokes have a combined average for both innings of 135. The combined average for the rest of the team is 139.

This test was the second this summer where 9 players in the first innings scored less than 20. It happened in the first test against NZ as well. In total, 56 of England's 86 innings resulted in scores of less than 20. 18 innings saw scores of over 50, 10 in the second innings, 8 in the first.

Sadly, Crawley’s record in first class cricket is now below county standard and yet when he scored the two hundred and sixty odd against Pakistan two years ago, he looked like a potential great. Similarly, a few respected Australian pundits proclaimed him the answer to England’s top order problems after watching him score eighty odd in last winter’s Ashes. He’s like James Vince in some ways except he’s hit heights in test cricket Vince can only dream about and yet Vince’s record in county cricket dwarfs Crawley’s - he really is a strange player.

As for fast bowlers, England have more bowlers capable of bowling at 90 mph than at any time I can remember, but they’re all injured apart from tyros like that Scrimshaw who plays for Welsh Fire and Brooks who’s only just come back from a long spell out injured.

Anderson and Broad are great bowlers and I’d still have at least one of them in the team, but, not for the first time in their careers, they did not exploit conditions in England you would have thought were made for them as well as the opposition did - I don’t think it’s down to them getting old because I can remember it happening a few times in the last decade and more.
