Yes. Hinkley Point - £4bn already spent and Sizewell C received planning permission in July 2022.

Sizewell B going through A 10 year life time extension too. And Rolls Royce small modular reactors have recently started the generic design phase.

There are lots of very clever ways of storing energy generated from renewable sources to make them more reliable ("portfolio dispatchable"). It doesn't need to be windy all of the time for the UK to source a lot of its energy needs relatively inexpensively from renewables. Using a portfolio approach to renewable generation effectively makes for a renewable system that doesn't need nuclear/fossil fuel backups.

In Arizona, one power company pumps water "backwards" in the middle of the night using excess power that nobody wants to then generate hydroelectric power during the peak times of the following day. Another company stores solar-generated power using molten salt so available supply better fits the local load curve.

Wind is free, but wind turbines aren't. They lose 4-5% efficiency pa. They cost £millions to produce, they use up energy to produce, they impact on the environment by stopping the flow of winds, and they're heavily subsidized. 25 -30% aren't working due to breakdown at any one time. And, if it isn't windy you get f. all !
People's taps have set on fire due to fracking. Respectfully, no thanks you. Fracking is extremely damaging to the planet and immediately, as well. It is a hard pass. Speak to anyone in the industry that isn't going to get big bucks from it.

I know if it isn't windy you get f all, that's the problem. That's the biggest challenge the energy industry is facing but it isn't because of some namby pamby lefties as you'd like to believe. Personally, I prefer my water not on fire.

I believe that infrastructure is vital however I can see why no government had the balls to do it
And that's why we are where we are.

Still surprises me with all the problems that come with it that people are pro fracking.

And with how quickly we’ve put up offshore wind farms that people are anti wind farm.

    Re: Gas Price

Gas price fallen back a little today - seems yesterday's huge rise was the announcement of unscheduled maintenance on the Nordstream gas pipeline announced by Russia.

They have our continent over a barrel and even though we get very little from Russia we are massively impacted.

Use candles instead of electric lighting.

Don't cook anything; serve food rare.

In preparation for late autumn and much of winter, invest in onesies for all the family.

Should you remain cold, run on the spot as fast as is necessary.

If you're single do what the Native Americans on the Plains used to do - find yourself the fattest squaw.

“More than 70% of pubs do not expect to survive winter as energy costs soar”

Save time boiling water water for tea by pre-heating it in a pan first.
To save electricity and using all your own tea and coffee as well as your own body energy ... go visit friends and use theirs instead
To avoid costly electric bills using your hair drier, ask the mother-in-law round for a chat after your shower.

    Re: Gas Price

Just listened to a radio phone in on LBC. It's amazing to me that some people think that because we don't get much gas (nil last month) from Russia, prices in the UK shouldn't rise. The simple fact is that, as supply diminishes, demand increases with resultant rise in prices as gas is bought internationally. It's a simple fact that the war in Ukraine has had a massive affect on prices. However, even prior to the war, there were warnings in the Press that prices would rise but not to the extent they have. Whichever way you look at it, governments historically have taken the lazy way out by purchasing gas from Russia instead of developing their own power sources. One thing seems clear to me is that high energy prices are here to stay and I cannot see how any government here and overseas can do much about it in the short to medium term. If the public want to be subsidised, and given cash handouts, to compensate the inevitable consequence is higher taxes.

Couldn't agree more. Although I'm sure sanity will return to the energy market in due course, but perhaps never as cheap as we have seen it.

All a bit sensible for CCMB.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the energy companies gives their EXCESS profit back to the customers, I know it wouldn’t happen, but it might make Putins energy war pointless? It’s basically the only thing the lunatic has got to dangle over Europe anyway…..

Isn't it only the energy producers that are making large sums of money and that is not primarily from domestic supply? The rest make very little; hence the number of energy companies that went broke including two of the companies that I used. And those that do make huge profits are taxed at the rate of around 65% due to the Tories version of the windfall tax.

Is it an absolute requirement that you are single and are you restricted to just the one squaw? Just asking.
