    Not being an economist I've always been very sceptical of UBI.
    Surely, if everyone gets that same basic bottom line, that pushes everyone's standard of living higher, then rents get unaffordable etc and it's still people at the bottom who would still end up without enough to get by and in poverty?

    It makes sense if you know what changes are coming.

    Welfare state Britain already provides a universal basic income through dozens of benefit payments that are up for grabs depending on people's different circumstances. The State Pension is the costliest of all of them.
