Thread: Starmer

    Starmer

Just watched Starmer's New Year speech. Despite suffering from a severe lack of Charisma, I think he did, and is doing ok; couldn't fault most of the content and his willingness to take questions on all areas.
Charismatic/Transformational leaders often win the day in politics and often get themselves and their country into a right mess. I think there is a lot to be said for less charismatic/more transactional leaders who plod on, winning respect by their actions rather than their words, taking a more common sense/consensus approach. Personally, I think this is what is needed now more than ever. Discuss.

Keir Starmer starts planning for SECOND Labour election victory... before he's even won the first

Given the mess the tories have made of - everything - pretty much the only things that would be able to prevent a Labour win next time around would be :
    a) a charismatic new leader for the tories who can make everyone forget about the terrible job they've done for the last decade.

    b) a hatchet job in the UK press a la Corbyn to scare the middle ground off from voting Labour again

I see no evidence at all that the Tories have anyone capable of pulling off a - so all Starmer has to do is be boringly competent and not too scary for the voters of middle england and he gets in.

You could argue that since Thatcher we have had three charismatic leaders (Blair, Cameron and Johnson) and five of what you call transactional leaders (Major, Brown, May, Truss, Sunak).

There is something to support the view that the more charismatic are better vote winners based on the above. The timing of their victories are equally important though. Both Blair and Cameron (with a little help) succeeded at the back end of over a decade of other party rule. It looks like we are reaching one of those tipping points again.

Distaste for the incumbent party may take Starmer all the way. However people also need something positive to vote for. It is good that he is putting the bones on policies that are distinctive from the Tories (obviously he won't satisfy the whole of the Labour church).

This seems to be the winning formula in Australia where a similarly uncharismatic leader in Albanese swept the Liberals from power.

Truss and Sunak didn't win any votes so it's about 50/50, and probably the timing which you mentioned is probably more important.
In the current times where so many are fed up, the transactional boring leader will win hands-down. The only charisma that the Tories could put up for election would be Boris and of course he brings back all of the problems that much of the Tory party and public want to forget.

    Re: Starmer

He's stolen Tories strapline Sir Keir Starmer has pinched the flagship slogan of Vote Leave by pledging a ‘Take Back Control’ bill if he becomes the UK’s next Prime Minister.

Glad he's stopped trying to have another referendum and over turn a democratic vote . ..

He once backed Corbyn as a leader , what a a turn around.. in thought .. and policy .

Oh hang on not seen the actual policy details yet .

    Such fun .

He is a very poor leader in my view and has no spark about him

I hope to god he gets over the line though I absolutely hate the Tories and those who continue to vote for the idiots need a slap

    Re: Starmer

I'm sure Sir Keirs quote of wanting partnership model’ between government and the private sector will set a few old socialist off , welcome back to Blairism ,that's exactly what put Labour in power for 14 years not endless funding of broken unfundable public services ,he did reduce waiting lists but it was at a price of part privatisation of Health supply lines and services .

All we need know is an illegal war to round it all off ..
