    R,I,P. Motty

Legendary commentator John Motson, who had an illustrious 50-year career with the BBC, has died aged 77.

Motson covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals for BBC Sport before retiring from the organisation in 2018.

Popularly known as 'Motty', he had worked on Match of the Day since 1971.

"It is with great sadness we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today (Thursday)," said a statement from Motson's family.

The son of a Methodist minister, he had stints as a reporter on the Barnet Press and Sheffield Morning Telegraph at the start of his career.

He also worked as a freelancer for BBC Radio Sheffield before he joined the BBC on a full-time basis in 1968.

After starting out as a sports reporter on Radio 2, he made his breakthrough on Match of the Day during the famous FA Cup replay between Hereford and Newcastle four years later.

Originally billed as a five-minute segment, Hereford's shock 2-1 win - featuring Ronnie Radford's famous 30-yard strike - saw the match promoted to the main game, with Motson capturing all the drama.

From 1979 to 2008 Motson - known for his trademark sheepskin coats and encyclopaedic knowledge of the game - was the BBC's voice on major finals such as the FA Cup, European Championships and World Cup.

That run included his record-breaking sixth World Cup final in Berlin in 2006 and his 29th FA Cup final in 2008. He also covered more than 200 England games.

His final game for Match of the Day was between Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion in 2018.

He was invited on to the pitch after full-time and applauded by the fans before Palace manager Roy Hodgson presented him with a framed copy of the programme from his first and last matches at Selhurst Park and a crystal microphone.

Motson became an OBE in 2001 for services to sports broadcasting.

Never was a great fan of his - not quite sure why exactly, but it never seemed natural to me with John Motson, whereas it did with Barry Davies. Still, if you’ve been a football fan during the past fifty years, he’s been a part of your life and so he must have had something for for something like that to have been the case.

    RIP

Anyone growing up and starting to love football in the 70s will have had John Motson’s commentaries close at heart. RIP John.

Loved his "Oh what a goal goal goal goal..... by Mullery" on MOTD.

He and Brian Moore were the voices of football but he grated on me in the latter years of his commentating.
I think it was because he tried copying the "newer breed" by talking too much (Carragher is by far the worst for overdoing this).

    RIP Motty.

The only commentator I have ever found bearable is Robert Phillips

Clive bloody Tyldesley was on the radio earlier giving praise to old motty

Tyldesley was dreadful thank god he's been moved on but the current crop of BBC ones are just as bad

    Lovely quote and so true

"John Motson possessed a remarkable broadcasting voice. It was one of those that you knew who he was the moment you heard him speak"

With Gary Lineker’s tweets still dominating the news cycle, BBC Sport bosses must be wishing its personnel would stop causing them such headaches. Back in the days when John Motson was king, they never had to worry about what the talent was up to. It was only junior employees who did.

Such as the younger female colleague who accompanied Motty to lunch one time. Most of the meal passed without incident, but shortly before dessert he retrieved a blue pill from his pocket. He showed it to her and asked if she knew what it was. She did. It was Viagra.

He then swallowed it, with the charming line: “You have 20 minutes to make your decision.”
