When I were a boy, Pompey were challenging for the Div 1 championship in the 1950s.
They had two red-hot wingers - Peter Harris and Gordon Dale.
Harris was my hero. Fast, beautifully balanced and direct. He was capped by England and would have had many caps if Mathews and Finney weren't around. What was really great was that from where I was in the crowd, when he cut in from the edge of the penalty area, my eye line was straight behind his run towards goal. Superb! I would see him shopping with his wife on Saturday mornings before the game. I was a winger back in the day and we reached a cup final at Fratton Park. I recreated Harris' run for twenty seconds. Didn't score, but I'll never forget that feeling.
I know, I know......shopping doesn't cut it.
But Gordon Dale - the guy who scored after 25 seconds against Matthews' Blackpool once - did have a shop about 100 metres from where we lived. He was a newsagent. A more grumpy an ole sod you wouldn't wish to meet.
