Thread: Official Ashes Thread

    Re: Official Ashes Thread

Australia lose their top three in the first hour - there’ll be talk of a dodgy ball change if they lose this.

    Re: Official Ashes Thread

The umpire J Wilson is very poor.

Surely the Stokes catch is legal. Arguably he lost control of the ball but I disagree as the catch was evident.

Thought the Aussies were going to crack at 3 down, but that's a great partnership. Forecast must be crap mind, draw still around 7/4

Stokes knew it wasn't complete the moment it left his hand.

Ben Stokes what have you done?

Lords Rules state (relating to a fair catch):

"33.2.2.1 the ball is held in the hand or hands of a fielder, even if the hand holding the ball is touching the ground, or is hugged to the body, or lodges in the external protective equipment worn by a fielder, or lodges accidentally in a fielder’s clothing."

Surely the ball was firmly in Stokes hand; that was my point.

Smith and Head gone. Game on?

I don't know the law and CBA to look it up but the commentators on the radio were all in agreement that he wasn't in control of his body and therefore it wasn't complete. Bit like the Aussie catch earlier in the series.

    EDIT:

    33.3 Making a catch

The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement.

What on earth is happening. Australia were absolutely cruising that game

    Re: Official Ashes Thread

Whatever happens while we can say Wood was badly missed with his extreme pace Woakes has been brilliant and has shown he should have been in from the start.

    Re: Official Ashes Thread

Will Stokes take the new ball. ?

If Australia win whatever he does will be questioned.

Though really England should win whatever he chooses.

Remarkable change of fortunes in such a short time.
Australia now 8 down and still need 90 odd.
Test cricket proving compelling viewing once again.

This series has proved once more how fantastic a game test cricket is. I wouldn’t cross the road to watch that Hundred shite starting this week.

Imagine if England had won the last one and the Ashes were coming down to this.

Fantastic series and what an ending. Pity the 4th Test spoilt things but this series shows why Test Cricket is the best.

Final ball he faced he hits for 6 and wins the match with his final ball.

Broad is an all time great.

    Re: Official Ashes Thread

Broad finishes his last test innings with the bat with a 6 and his last test n the field with a wicket.

Ah well. Our 3rd xi captain has just asked if I’ll make up numbers on Saturday. How can I say no after watching that series. Right, let’s go and get the linseed oil out!

    Well played England.

    Re: Official Ashes Thread

I couldn’t see England taking ten wickets today, especially with most of the afternoon washed out, but, while everyone talks about the batting with bazball, it also has seen them become far better at taking twenty wickets in the match than they were.

The winning margins of two and three wickets and two of forty odd runs shows how close the series was, but it’s hard to see how it would have been anything other than a very comfortable win for England at Old Trafford if it were not for the rain.

The one negative for me is that a five match test match series in this country should not be finishing in July as it was shoehorned into almost a month to accommodate the bloody Hundred - what an anti climax the next month threatens to be.
