Positioning was always a weakness of his. Great shotstopper but rarely ventured far from his line for crossesand corners.

    5-0 absolute stuffing

    Re: Hibs v Villa

To think that it's little over 6 years ago since we stuffed Villa 3-0 at home in the league. We thoroughly deserved that win; we were the better side, not just that day but for the whole season.

2 seasons later, Villa replaced us in the PL and the chasm between us is massive.

Five seasons ago City completed a Premier League double over Brighton. It’s fair to say the clubs have gone in different directions since.

Both Brighton and Villa narrowly stayed up in their first season after promotion. If only we could have managed it.

This is an indication of how poor the SPL has become.
Long gone are the days of teams like Aberdeen winning the UEFA cup.
Maybe we should join, we'd be in Europe every season

No surprises there. Villa's wage bill is roughly the same as Hib's annual bill after a fortnight. Scottish football couldn't cope with that, unless Celtic and Rangers were in the PL. Of course, if they joined the PL, the SPL is a wasteland.

Just pointing out the difference in budgets, income, expenditure and obviously quality.

I disagree with the 'new' Rangers being able to cope as the original version of the club was liquidated in 2012 trying to keep up in Scotland.

From someone who watched Scottish clubs like Aberdeen, Dundee United challenge Europe's elite in the 80s its a severe drop in quality and a shame for football for those of a certain age.

I think rather than a drop off, they’ve been static and many other leagues & teams have moved on (financially), the gaps between the haves and have nots continues to grow. It’s not just Scotland, it’s the same across Europe, the big 4 leagues dominate with the odd intervention from France or Portugal.

Villa are and always will be a bigger club than us. They were always going to rise to the top.

I don’t think that’s any mark on us.

Now Brighton, Bournemouth and Brentford. They are far more comparable

Point taken, other leagues that have been impacted primarily the Dutch and Belgians.

During the 80s I can remember Mechelen winning Cup Winners Cup, Anderlecht competing in finals of European finals. Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven were seen as big clubs. Two of those clubs won European trophies in the 80s.

In the days when they actually were 'cups', ie 100% knockout tournaments. The mini league set up practically renders surprises/giant-killing impossible.

    True.

I'm in Birmingham and watched the Hibs / Villa game whilst knocking back a pint yesterday afternoon. A few Villa fans knocking about getting extremely giddy about the performance and Villa being in Europe (which is fair enough).

It does seem an age away when they beat Bayern Munich in the European Cup though and thought then how distorted the Premier League is.

I'm getting all whimsy and reminiscing now.

    All down to money.

Cheer on Wrexham but their fairy tale is all down to money . Man City compete with the aristocracy of Europe , money allows them to compete at that level.

The Old firm are now caught between a rock and a hard place. Way too good for the SPL, but no chance of getting to the latter stages of the CL,
They are strapped for cash, and even if they had dough, the standard of the SPL would stop big names signing.

they've eaten the rest of the SPL, no sympathy at all they keep all the revenue to themselves.

similarly to what Bayern have done in Germany, it isn't a healthy situation in the long run
