Bulut's free scoring City - looking at other City managerial starts

Erol Bulut's City has scored in all of his first 8 games as manager. This has only happened 7 times before and only once prior to the 1990s. We've scored 15 goals in those 8 games. This is how he compares to the others.

Alan Cork (2000) - scored 23 goals, W6 D2 L0, putting 5 past Bristol Rovers, 4 past York City and, famously, 3 in successive home comebacks against Lincoln City and Hartlepool United.

    Lennie Lawrence (2002) - Cork's successor, scored 20 goals, W6 D2 L0, 7 came in a visit to Oldham Athletic.

    Cyril Spiers (1947) - scored 18 goals, W4 D2 L2, including a 6-0 home win over Millwall.

Mick McCarthy (2021) - scored 17 goals, W6 D2 L0, biggest win a 4-0 home success over Preston North End.

Malky Mackay (2011) - scored 17 goals, W5 D2 L1, scored 5 against Huddersfield in the League cup.

Erol Bulut (2023) - scored 15 goals, W4 D1 L3, not scored more than 3 in a game but have scored 2 on 5 occasions.

Kenny Hibbitt (1996) - scored 13 goals, W4 D2 L2, only managed 8 games, we scored in 11 successive games including the 3 after his successor, Russell Osman's appointment.

    Eddie May (1991) - scored 10 goals, W2 D3 L3, 7 games scoring 1 in each, scored 3 in the other.

Number of games from a start of a managerial appointment where we've scored in successive games:

Lawrence - 14. First blank was in the playoffs against Stoke.

May - 12. Biggest win was 5-0 at home to Wrexham in the 12th game, then failed to score at Mansfield.

McCarthy - 10. 10th game was a 4-0 win over Derby, he got a contract extension and we then scored 2 in the next 6.

Mackay - 10. Mackay holds the club record of only failing to score once in his first 25 games as manager, a 0-0 against Leicester.

Cork - 9. Run broken by a 2-0 defeat at Brighton in the cup, scored in all bar 1 of his first 20 games, netting 54 goals in those games, then 3 blanks on the trot to Rochdale, Brighton and Blackpool.

Spiers - 9. Second in the table and looking good for promotion, scored in all bar 1 of his first 15 games, then a winless run of 8 in March/April 1948, scoring only 3 in those games, saw City finish 5th.

Other managers who have scored more than Bulut in their first 8 games:

Ron Stitfall/Ernie Curtis - 25. They were a caretaker combo in 1962 before George Swindin took over permanently. Scored 6 against Preston and 5 against Swansea, Grimsby and Reading. Only failed to score in 1 game, a 6-0 defeat to Chelsea

Frankie Burrows - 18. Managed in 1998, included a 7-1 home win over Doncaster, failed to score in 2 of those games.

Bill McCandless - 16. City's best manager in terms of win ratio, only managed the club for 1 and a bit seasons after the second world war. His side scored 93 goals in winning promotion back to the second division.

Two goals a game without a strong Striker, keep the clean sheets and we go up as Champions!

Currently second top scorers in the Championship. I doubt anyone would have predicted that at the start of the season.

To be fair Bulut made it clear things needed to change in the final third, it’s a new front line and then some.

It was. Mad Mick won 6 on the trot just after he took over. That's also the answer to the last time we won 4 out of 5 in the league (and should have won at Ipswich).
