What a player and manager he was.

One of the all-time greats. Wow, and only just one year older than me - scary!

Not many have won the world cup as a player and a manager like him.

Him, Zagallo & Deschamps I think. Zagallo passed away last week.

Sad news, I remember watching him in the 1970 World Cup, where after Bobby Charlton was substituted, he took hold of the game and West Germany won 3-2. Such an elegant player.

My footballing hero before the Brazil class of 1970 came along.

Elegant, classy with a superb footballing brain. He made the game look easy.

    RIP Franz.

Always looked so young, so this news comes as a shock as I thought he’d be around for a long time yet.

Unusual as I think he’s one of very few great players who you think of as being associated with the position he played - a position that is obsolete these days, probably because keepers do the sweeper’s job these days. Mind you, if someone as good as Beckenbaur was around these days, maybe that would be different - was also a World Cup winning manager, but I’d rate him a better player than manager.

    RIP

I remember seeing him in the flesh when Bayern played away at Gladbach in 1977 and he looked imperious.
However, when the parks team I was playing for had a surfeit of forwards and a poor defence, I opted to move from the left wing to become a sweeper, having been inspired by The Kaiser.
I'm not that tall and had never played in defence before - but I enjoyed seeing the defenders in front of me going one-on-one with the opposing attackers and mopping up, unchallenged, the odd ball that eluded them. I even scored a few goals as I had no-one to mark. I got the Player of the Season award for the only ever time and without really breaking a sweat.
    Danke, Herr Beckenbauer!

By the way, did you know that the word 'Kaiser' is cognate with 'Caesar', 'Tsar' and 'Czar'?
A 'Caesarian section' in German is known as 'Kaiserschnitt' (the 'shnitt' meaning 'cut' / 'incision').

Had a pair of Adidas Beckenbauer boots as a kid (the days when there were no more than a dozen pairs of boots to choose from).
Got 'em from Edwards Sports St John's Square.

I remember Stylo Matchmaker George Best boots at that time but not many others.

    True legend of the game.

    RIP Der Kaiser.
