Disaster for the folk directly affected and for the local economy. Short sighted plan really. How long is it going to take to build the electric arc smelter and will there be enough green energy to run it? No more virgin steel to be made there. Meanwhile UK will import virgin steel from places such as China who don't give a hoot about burning coal to fuel their blast furnaces.

Uk government should just take it over and keep some of the jobs at least…..lots of businesses rely on that place being open for their own existence….

Apparently, once British Steel's Scunthorpe plant also closes its blast furnaces, UK will be the only G20 country not able to make steel from raw materials

It’s estimated knock on effect to the local economy: 12,000 jobs lost and £3.2 billion.

It's going to devastate Port Talbot, and to a certain extent, Bridgend as well. A very short-sighted decision - if they planned to close it, then work on a replacement should have started a long time ago. Wales is turning into a job wasteland.

I'm hoping it's just TATA angling for more money off the Gov.

Couple that with electricity, gas and most of our water in foreign hands, half of our national institutions [post office deliveries etc] owned by multi-nationals, it's difficult to argue against the view that the UK is built on banking, insurance and property..

The Tories don’t give a flying fig about Wales or any other area with Labour voters. They’re only interested in the “money men” Trouble is Labour is just as bad, because they’re incompetent of leading the Country.

It's more than that now, mate.

It's becoming more and more apparent that the UK Government haven't been no help at all.

Welsh Gov simply can't help, whether they want to or not. Welsh Gov's powers only really extend to keeping somewhere like McArthur Glen open. They are powerless when there are international supply chains.

Huge victim of the general green agenda which is going to be a big political battle in coming years.

What annoys me is that this shit will still be made, but in China now, with less environmental regulations and then shipped to Europe from there.

Agree with comments about the green agenda. It is costing thousands of jobs yet India and China are producing lots of cheap steel from their heavy uncontrolled industry

really makes no sense, made in china with zero regard to the environment, then shipped over her on ships burning loads of fuel, its lose lose

Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk

China and India are just doing what we and America used to do

    Expand

It was OK for us n the days of the empire so whilst it's bad news for the UK economy as we can't compete and its very bad news for the environment its just the way things are

When we had an element of protection from government and the EU the UK car, steel and petrochemicals industry was lauded

But Cameron and the brexit mob got what they wanted and its only going to get worse and worse

Only the people who relied on heavy industry propped up by Brussels yet voted to leave Europe can really answer why they ticked the box

it still astonishes me and there is no way back

yea, but the Modern world is making all the right noises about climate change and saving the planet, yet we seem to ignore China ( and India etc etc ) who dont really care, so why are we playing by the new rules and they aren't ? ?
