Selling strikers in the summer: Sory Kaba & "sex with your ex" ?

They say never go back a second time. Fowler's second return to Liverpool didn't result in glory. But Michael Chopra's several returns to our club didn't turn out too bad. 22 goals in 42 games when he was first with us. He returned in 2008 on loan and bagged 5 goals in 11 games. 4 in 16 in 2009 (OK not so good). Then 25 in 73 between 2009-11. Not so magical but not a disaster. There is no rule here on "sloppy seconds" for former players. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

With that in mind, look at Sory Kaba. Currently at Las Palmas on a reputed 15k Euros (12-13k GBP a week) he has only played in 12 out of possible 30 games. How as he done? 1 goal. A disaster. Good overall consistent record wherever he has been other than Las Palmas

    YEAR CLUB APPS GOALS
    2014–2016 Alcobendas 52 (13)
    2016–2017 Elche B 32 (14)
    2017–2019 Elche 59 (22)
    2019–2023 Midtjylland 73 (20)
    2021–2022 → OH Leuven 26 (10)
    2023 → Cardiff City (loan) 17 (8)

So how's this? We flog the failing and immobile and goal-shy duo of Etete and Meite up front. Go back for Kieffer Moore and Sory Kaba up front, to complement Robinson at 10 / wide / striker. That is three option for mobile forwards in our 4-5-1 system. Robinson, Colwill or Turnbull at 10.

Take Rambo off the wage bill (and appoint as coach / ambassador). Sell Meite, Etete, Wintle, Sawyers , Rinomohta and injury prone O' Dowda. Surely that creates the wages headroom and some purchase money. Buy some mobile and younger centre mids, and Robinson, Colwill and Turnbull can be our creatives and build around them.

So how feasible is Kaba? Well Kaba was sold for 2m Euros to Las Palmas. Surely an offer of £800k-1m and a wage offer of 12-13k GBP a week would bring him back for a sloppy seconds? I reckon Colwill and Turnbull putting the balls in behind for Moore/Kaba up front, and Bowler / Ashford / Tanner / Robinson running in behind would transform our attack and get pace and goals back. And look at the league table - defence has been OK-ish. It is goals that we are missing. A good summer can be done. Go on Kaba, you know you want to!!

We can get a song going after Eddie Grant's "Baby Come Back": "Kaba come back......"

It looks like Robinson is on his way out of the club and didn't Bulut try and sign two Greek/Turkish players in January, a top Striker better than Moore according to some, and an attacking midfielder? If he does stay I would imagine he will be looking in the Turkish/Greek/ German Leagues again and trying to get some value for money.

The fact that he was looking but blocked from buying those players shows he was trying to do something different and move away from his defensive approach, but needed better players to do so.

The summer market is different and without a embargo, it will be an interesting Summer to see who he can get in.

And it all falls apart when you say sell Meite Etete Rinomohta Sawyers.

Getting them off the wage bill is hard enough let alone selling them.

Maybe Etete to replace Davies in Belguim.

How do you "take Rambo off the wage bill"

"so Aaron, about that money we promised to pay you if you came here, well we were wondering if it would be OK if we didn't pay you"

Can't see that going down well

It's disappointing because Meite, Rinomhota and Sawyers all had a decent track record at this level. I'm sure we wouldn't have been the only clubs in for any of them.

Etete has an interesting profile, he's an unusual player and every now and then he will do something to make you think he will kick on, but it's too far between those things. When he has played he has usually been extremely isolated up front, which isn't really his fault - we've had some excellent strikers who would fail abysmally if asked to do that role in this side. I think he would be a far better player as part of a front two.
Likewise the likes of Davies, Ashford, Robinson, Meite

Re: Selling strikers in the summer: Sory Kaba & "sex with your ex" ?

Not an ex but a ‘nearly’- Andrej Ilic who we were rumoured to be signing in January has so far played a total of 15 minutes for Lille since he joined due to injury.

I can't help feeling that our scouting nwtwork needs a complete overhaul - Andrej Ilic was the last youngster we looked at but we were too late to the part and his stock was already too rich for us. Look at our neighbours for example and someone like Piro who they bough for about £1m when he was 20/21. This season they've bough Ronald for about the same money and if I were a betting man I'd suggest he'll also get sold at some point for a tidy profit after doing a job for them.

Nobody’s going to want them. The only one we’d likely get an offer for would be Davies. In fact, didn’t we get one from Burnley?

Maybe Kaba just had his Ken Zohore style half a season purple patch with us last season and Bulut dodged a bullet. Hes been poor this season.
