Thread: David Coote.

    David Coote.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football...s/ce8y6zqjgdyo

That incident discussed in other threads from Saturday’s game where Alex Robertson was penalised in an incident which some thought could have led to Blackburn having a player sent off reminded me of a similar incident in the game against Peterborough in our Championship winning season when they, as the division’s bottom side at the time ended our 100 % winning record. Coote was the ref that day and Peterborough scored from the resultant free kick, he also gave Birmingham a ridiculous penalty which decided a game at St Andrews and I slagged him off like I do Bobby Madley now in my blog after the two games.

I couldn’t believe it when he started appearing in the Premier League, but I now think he’s one of the Premier League’s best refs - wonder if this could be the end of his time in the top league?

Think it’s a reality check for people who think referees are totally impartial and don’t have any subconscious bias against certain clubs

Won’t ever get rid of it but amazing to be so stupid as to get caught saying that

Imagine he will go abroad as can’t ref in the PL any more, the scrutiny would be ridiculous

I don't think there are many that believe that

Perhaps if managers are upset that referees have taken against them then they should stop screaming in their faces

Yes I don’t know how they put up with that sort of abuse on a regular basis

Probably not the wisest comments to make, if genuine, but hell, social media etc. is slowly squeezing everyone into a narrow, sterile corridor of behaviour which you step out of at your peril..

I always remember his name as he had one of the most appalling displays I ever saw at the CCS. I can't recall the game but it was out of this world poor. I was astonished he was on the premier list and can't recall a game he had ref'd when he hadn't guessed his way through.

He is done now, especially as its the scousers who love a moan and conspiracy complex

I thought Klopp was a bit of a character when he first arrived on the Premier League scene. A change from the usual lot knocking about. Christ, did his behaviour wear thin, what a knob when things went against Liverpool. First on the pitch at the final whistle flaring his Turkey teeth at the officials, whinging in the after match interviews. Good riddance to the knob I say. I’d love it if there was law passed by Westminster that all football referees, after retirement, were compelled to give their honest opinions of any manager they were asked about

I agree with everything he’s said in that video, if it’s genuine.

yes he is a prem league ref, but surely he can still have a opinion on Liverpool and Klopp ( which what he said seemed fair, if a manager has a right go at a official, do they really expect the official to forget it and not have a dislike to them )

    I would shake his hand

Shame he didn't give Klopp a leathering too

He did say he hated Klopp, so there would be unconscious bias. We all know some referees make bad decisions against us, and it will be the same for other clubs.

    Re: David Coote.

Rodger Gifford, when this fella was on the Football League list, I don’t think we ever won when he reffed the City in Welsh Cup games

In February 2022 he was charged by the FA with misconduct following the Bristol Rovers v Crawley Town match in League Two on 4 September 2021, at which he was the Match Observer, for abusive and/or insulting and/or improper language, aggravated by a reference to nationality. He admitted the offence and was suspended for eight weeks, fined £200 and ordered to undertake an education programme. In May 2024, he was found guilty of the same offences related to post-match comments following the Newport County AFC v Barnet FC FA Cup match on 2 December 2023 where he was working as the PGMOL referee observer, and suspended from all football and football-related activity for five months, fined £400 and ordered to attend a mandatory face-to-face education programme.[17][18][19]

Nice fella by the sound of it

I know, that's what I'm saying. I'm disagreeing that there are man that feel refs are fully impartial

If managers don't want to be perceived as tw@ts then they should change their behaviour accordingly

Yes true, Fergie got away with it but I'm sure a few who hated Warnock made decisions against him.

Also undoubtedly true of players. We'd all love referees to be completely impartial but I think its naive to think that if a player's consistently abusive to a ref that that won't have some effect on their decision making on occasion. I wonder if the same is true if the crowd is giving the ref loads of shit, whether the 50/50's might go the other way

The changes to the way in which dissent is dealt with definitely seem to be having a positive effect. There appears to be far less of it this season and offenders are being booked much more quickly, which is all good as far as I'm concerned.

Refs are bound to have players, clubs and managers they simply don't like. After all, the rest of us do. How that actually affects their performances is almost certainly variable I reckon.

As for crowds giving refs grief, I very much doubt that ever has a positive effect.

Hes off his coconut in that video. Cootes should have known better than to let himself get filmed, but what a **** of a so called mate to release that into the public domain.

In terms of his officiating, he wont be missed.

Hopefully that’s the last we will see of him. What a pillock.

    Re: David Coote.

All the articles I've read have said things like "One of Britain's top referees', or "a man at the top of his game". So clearly, he's not biased. Otherwise, he wouldn't be where he is.
