Perhaps the doubt about Robinson is that he doesn't really play like a 9 or a 10. In fact we've invented a new position - the 9 and a half. I'm not sure he would've scored Salech's goal on Saturday but would've been loitering around the penalty spot for the pull back.
This is his third season here and his first good one (bearing in mind the second was hit by injury (and sulking) and the first was a general shambles) so while this board is often riddled with recency bias, perhaps it isn't a case of what have you done for us lately but is this the new normal or a glitch in the old normal?
The issue with Rubin Colwill as I see it is how his unpredictability affects the rest of the players. A few times on Saturday he picked up the ball, went on a mazey run (often going backwards first), then at somepoint either had a shot,or laid the ball off.
Trouble was that the rest of the team, in particular the new players, didn't know how to react. For all the training routines that Alves and Mannsverk did in midweek, I doubt they involved trying to position themselves for one of Colwill's runs.
In his defence, he quite often goes on those runs because nobody's moving at all to offer themselves, he also tends to keep the ball when he does this. Tanner's a limited player but he's honest and will look for the ball, there were times on Saturday where El Ghazi was practically marking their full back
He definitely needs to learn when to shoot though, couple of opportunities that he spurned against Bristol by taking an extra touch
nobody in the team has more shot creating actions, or passes into the penalty area, he has the second highest progressive carries (behind
O'dowda), the highest progressive passes.
he has the second highest expected goals+assists (behind Robinson). there are plenty of players who are contributing a hell of a lot less than Rubin Colwill yet he's constantly the one being criticised
Shot creating actions, progressive carries, progressive passes.
Good grief....
Rubin Colwill made his first team debut in February 2021 and made his first Championship start in April 2021.
The 2021/22 season was Colwill’s first as a full-time member of the senior squad. He made 15 Championship starts, 19 sub appearances and scored 5 goals. He also scored in the FA Cup tie at Anfield and played twice for Wales, scoring once. Things were looking very promising indeed.
At that stage I think it’s fair to say almost everyone connected with Cardiff City held very high hopes for him. Colwill appeared to have the potential to become one of the most exciting players the club has produced in decades. Some will no doubt argue he still does.
However, since 2021/22, his Championship goals tallies read as follows:
2022/23 – 0
2023/24 – 1
2024/25 – 1
To put that into perspective, Alex Robertson has scored more Championship goals in 22 (+3) appearances for City than Colwill has managed during the last three seasons.
At the end of the day, an attacking midfielder like Colwill is in the side primarily to create and score goals, and he doesn’t do either often enough. I’ve no idea what the answer is with him as he clearly has bags of natural talent and, as a rule, I enjoy watching him play. But there’s no doubt he’s a player who flatters to deceive in terms of end product.
Yes he is frustrating and lacks that end product but I love seeing him play . It is supposed to be entertainment . He definitely does not bore me like so many of the midfielders we have had .
Would people be happy if we sold him ??
