I'm not surprised. In the last 42 years the number of subs has shot up

Just out of interest the first time numbers on shirts were used in a league game was 1928 and it didnt become compulsory until 1939. In that first 1910 game there wasnt a 1-11

Bit off topic but weren’t players numbered 1-22 when numbers were introduced? 1-11 one team & 12-22 the other.

Some players should either be anonymous or give their number up,yes you number 1206 !
You might have started something here - try 1001!!

    668. HEATON, Tom; 669. KENNEDY, Mark should be 968 and 969.

I love the jarring contrast between thr calibre of some of the players next to each other i.e.
    961 Trevor Sinclair
    963 Robbie Fowler
    962......... Ross Turnbull

Bonkers isn't it - having a Champions League, Europa League and 2-time FA Cup winner sandwiched between those 2 is crazy 😊

Possibly the most models awarded to an ex-City player of all time.

That's nothing to do with the point I was making about the Legacy numbers.

Just one little thing: I hope they correct #1 to #11 from all showing as #1.

It's a symbolic touch, and a nice one in my opinion. Football is a team game and you need 11 players to start a game.

There was no "first Cardiff City player" because without all 11 of those men there would be no "Cardiff City" to be a player for. Well over 100 years later we're supporting the club that began when they stepped out together onto that pitch for the first time. They're all equally as important as each other to be given the #1 spot.

Also, how do you decide who would be players #2 to #11? I doubt the tactics or formation played back then would match the modern numbering system and is there even any accurate records of who played where?

As importantly perhaps, numbers weren't worn on shirts until the late 1920's.

For the first ever game it would be alphabetically for the starting XI. This would also apply if players made their debuts in the same game any season.

If players come on as substitutes the order of coming on would apply.

Yes I understand how it works in any game in any season. But this wasn't any game. It's what's been considered the very first game of the club that we have all come to know and follow many years after all 11 men have long since passed away.

If Billy Watt had slipped over 2 mins before kick off and been replaced by a bloke called Mr Aaronson, then Tom Abley would've become #2 instead.

Like I said, football is a team game and you need 11 players to kick off. Every man that stepped out onto that pitch was only able to do so because of the 10 other men who walked out with him. Symbolically, the club was born from those 11 men equally.

It's a nice touch and I'd much prefer the club keep all of them as #1 rather than relegating their importance in history based on their surname.

Showing your age a bit there Bloop . I can remember Dr Findlay's Casebook being one of those programmes the whole family sat down to watch back in the sixties (can still hear the theme tune today) - it used to bore me rigid.
