Brian Barry-Murphy spoke to the press after City’s defeat to AFC Wimbledon in the Vertu Trophy.
“A lot of the players will have never experienced playing against players of this nature, in terms of playing senior football before." Brian began. "Until they’re exposed to that, you can never learn from it. So, the players will have had what they feel is a difficult experience, but in the long term will be beneficial for them.
“We know that Wimbledon have no game on Saturday so that was a full-strength team from league action, so the level of challenge was very high for the young players, who struggled to compete with the physicality the opponent showed through the course of the game. In terms of our players, I couldn’t be happier with their attitude, their spirit, because it’s not easy when you lose by such a heavy scoreline.
"You saw all of the different players we have from our Academy, and it’ll be an invaluable experience for all of those young players moving forward. We believe fully in our Academy, we’ve seen the fruits of what that’s done for us this season in terms of the players that have played at a First Team level.
“I think it’s clear that you can see the traits that we want these young players to be associated with, in terms of how they play the game. The important qualities are to try to be as aggressive as possible and display the skill that we see from those at First Team level who have gone before them.
"Tonight was my first real sight of Noah [Williams] who made his debut, who came on and looked very assured. Axel [Donczew] came on and you saw the style of play that he displayed, so it’s an exciting time for the future, and when the time comes for them, they’ll possess the ability that’s there for all to see.
Tonight’s fixture also saw Joel Colwill captain the Bluebirds for the first time.
“I was really pleased with Joel, who obviously had a bad knee injury at Northampton. Part of the reason for his selection was to get him as fit as we want based on how important he is to us, so it was beneficial for us to get 90 minutes out of Joel. I thought he supported the young players very well in the most difficult moments of the game.”

Hmm. I know we have a very congested fixture list, but this was a winnable game, and a winnable trophy. Not sure about everyone else, but I found the team selection very disappointing.
There was Ashford, Lawlor, osho and Colwill in the starting line up, all first team regulars although early on in their professional journey. Maybe Murphy wanted to o see how they would react when put into a position of seniority,, where they had to look out for the less experienced players, and why not.
It was obvious to see that all of the above mentioned were in new territory, but I think it's a good thing, because if that's what Murphy was attempting then it's a good lesson for these players. A change in dynamic and something else for them to consider. I wouldn't say that there were any losers, it just was, nobody failed.
Thought the team who played the Arsenal U21 game deserved to have their moment in the spot light again but this team made no sense ahead of a congested December. Ashford and Lawlor particularly.
“So proud of the players. The reward for them has to be that they get the chance to compete in the next round”
This is what BBM said after the Arsenal game yet only two outfield players started from that game. Very poor from him to make a comment like that if not going to folllow through with it and having looked at the result you can imagine the players who played against Arsenal would be extremely disappointed to not have been given the opportunity.
Wimbledon fielded three players who haven't started a league game this season (one was the keeper), while Sasu has only started two games. So, while it was a strong Wimbeldon side, they weren't quite at full strength.
Sasu had only scored one goal before last night, and that was in this competition in December 2023. He's only 20 years old.
Sasu came from their academy. In his previous 74 appearances he’s got one goal. Somebody I know who follows Wimbledon are hoping we’ll offer millions for him on the back of that performance- so yes potentially another Gavin Gordon
I see BBM has addressed Joel Colwill’s selection but it is strange that Lawlor was selected for this game, especially as he’s had a few recent injury issues. I wonder what the reasoning was there?
I agree I would take the 1-0 league win over this trophy game every single time
