gambling. I know lots of people who do it and they tell me they all win.
I don't believe it and I never saw a poor bookie!
Any honest gamblers out there/ And what would your family have been able to do with the money you wasted??

In the last year £200
I bet a couple of quid a week on average I'd say, since I've been old enough to gamble. I'd say I'm about a grand down in 18 years. That's a not a grand wasted though, I enjoyed it, I wouldn't do it every week if I didn't enjoy it.
I reckon I've done 75 grand in 35 years of gambling .
Probably more
A tenner, down the back of a mates sofa.
On the lottery? Thousands?
I rarely gamble on sports. And if I do, I don't bet much.
Nothing. I joined The Salvation Army.
Got converted. Signed the pledge. Stopped spendind money on chicks.
Now I am a rich boring git.
Depends on how you look at it. In the real sense, $500 in Vegas in a night. After being 2k up. Very out of the ordinary for me- I have never put that much at stake before or since and I normally walk away if I double my money.
In literal terms, maybe 1500 on one leg of a matched bet.
I once watched, live, as a few people lost thousands and even tens of thousands on an apparent overround on first scorer in a league cup final. Went tits up when tierry henry didnt start. Luckily I was too confused (amd just weary enough) by what was happening to get involved.
I estimate probably 40k in the last 10 years.
Was a compulsive gambler on the football, then online would bet on any sports, all night, and then at my worst got addicted to the FOBTs and online Roullette.
Prior to the last 18 months where I got a grip on my addiction, the previous 3 years were my worst. Sneaking out of the house and out of work to gamble. Couldn’t see it at the time but behaviour was absurd.
Done about 20k in a 2-3 year period. Lost 6.5k in one sitting, and 5k another time. Lost that 5k 2 weeks before Xmas 2016 and said enough enough.
Thankfully I come out the other side. Many don’t. I just bet 5-10 on the football on the weekend for a bit of interest.
That's very honest.
Online roulette is addictive and can suck a lot of money from you. I've not been in your league but have seen quite large gains and ultimately significant losses in the past.
FOBT seems like a drain on ones pocket. Does anyone ever win, I can't understand the different possibilities. My fruit machine experiences were on Cardiff station at 10p a time and a few nudges.
I barely bet anything these days. A lottery ticket now and again, last online bet was the grand national probably. I'd like a few footy accumulators but I get overwhelmed by all the options so haven't done one in more than a year
The FOBTs I cant even begin to explain to you Mike. If you are a compulsive gambler, which I am, you keep throwing money in them thinking its got to start paying out at some point, but even though you know it isnt going to, you just cant stop. If I had put £600 in the machine for example, then got £400 back so I was only losing £200 instead of just taking a £200 hit I would think "Ive got to get all my money back" then end up losing that £600 and more. Id lose a grand on them more times than I want to remember.
I remember one time I went down the shop on my lunch hour, started losing, rang my boss to say I had a personal issue, and couldnt come back to work and stayed in there all afternoon. I put £2k in and eventually it started to pay back and I got £1800 back. I hit the £500 jackpot 3 times in a row and had these chinese guys jumping all over me thinking it was all winnings and really I was still £200 down.
The really big losses ive had have been on live roullette online where as you say you can win big quickly, but lose big very quickly also. I was doing £500-£1000 spins at one point. Crazy. Both times mentioned where I lost £6.5k and £5k I was actually winning but as a gambler its never enough and so eventually they got their money back, and all of mine too.
Ive had one or two lapses since I finally decided to jack in the roullette but nothing major, lose £200, win £300, lose £50.etc and probably won more than I lost, but winning is actually worse because it makes you feel like playing them again.
I never went to gamblers anonymous or counselling, spoke to family obviously, my old man baled me out a couple of times. I just try and keep telling myself theres no point looking back at what youve lost, just enjoy the future. Im fortunate enough that my gambling debt, which im still paying off, is manageable, and ive still got plenty of disposable income to enjoy a nice life.
I hope if theres anyonelse reading this who is going through a gambling addiction, that they seek help, or tell someone about their problem. Its one that is easier to hide than drink or drugs but it affects you mentally.
It actually helps putting my experience down in writing like this as always found it difficult to talk to someone about it. I was in denial for too long because I didnt want to accept I had a serious problem, and that cost me thousands more by not addressing it earlier.
Correct. The last few times ive won, small amounts considering my history (£50-£100) ive just given the money to the missus and told her to keep it for us for a meal / night out, or if she needs to get the kids something. If I kept the money it would only go back to the bookies, as id be going down the bookies every day instead of just doing my football bet on the weekend.
Ive even managed to stop betting midweek this season. Literally down to £5 on a Saturday so far this season and no midweek bets.
I used to win £30 and think, how can I turn this into £60, and once I turn it into £60 how can I turn it into £120.etc. Never works. Always end up with zero.
Put £50 in my sky bet account at the beginning of last season. Currently have £100.00. Cardiff winning a lot last season certainly helped in my weekend accies. This season I should get great odds with Cardiff included in them but I fully expect to be putting in another £50 before Xmas as I'm a bookie's dream as I bet with my heart not my head!
Feel for the fella above - can't imagine the pain of that addiction. I try to explain to my 20 year old that he's never going to win - but it seems its just a natural thing for people to do now on the football. When I was growing up the only time I wet to the bookie was for The National once a year - now my facebook feed on the weekend is full of boys weekend accie bets.

Only takes ten minutes. I know it's not as easy as just doing this to stop yourself gambling, but it helps.
Thank feck that I hardly ever gamble and then only a quid on the horses every few months.
Remember years ago a young lad in work lost his months wages in a lunchtime and had to go home to face his missus. Always remembered that.
Perhaps I'm lucky I haven't an addictive personality, apart from the City and the Labour party!
