It's like electric cars, it's not for everyone, and trying to adapt old badly insulated houses is pointless, the same with trying to charge cars on terraced streets without a drive.
Also, the technology will improve making the energy costs lower and the distance for EVs longer.
I will avoid both as long as I can until they improve or they change to something better.
It's still worth improving the insulation in older houses as much as you can, if only to reduce the heating bills (the payback time can be quite short) - but I agree it is highly unlikely that you could achieve PassivHaus accreditation in anything other than a new purpose-built ecohome.
The situation with EV's reminds me of the old VHS vs Betamax saga back in the 70's. Better to wait a few years to see which becomes the dominant technology!
