    New Law Next Season

A goalkeeper holding the ball for more than 8 seconds will result in a corner being given to the attacking team. I s’pose I should be saying ‘Discuss’.

If it gets enforced (it won't) it will be an improvement. An actual deterrent to time wasting.

I wish they would ban “short corners”, for time wasting

    Frigging hate them

The decision comes as a response to goalkeepers keeping the ball in their grasp longer than the currently permitted six seconds.

As it stands, Law 12.2 states that an indirect free-kick is to be awarded if a goalkeeper “controls the ball with the hand/arm for more than six seconds before releasing it”.

A statement released by the IFAB on Friday read: “The IFAB has unanimously decided to amend Law 12.2 (Indirect free kick).

"The amendment means that if a goalkeeper holds the ball for longer than eight seconds (with the referee using a visual five-second countdown), the referee will award a corner kick to the opposing team (rather than the current indirect free kick for more than six seconds).

How is a short corner time wasting? You're on form, fair play!

Cumon, you’ve seen enough football to see that touching the ball it’s circumference to another player, repeatedly, is not pretty to watch

Agreed, but the ball is live at a short corner, it's up to the opposition to get the ball back.

There’s already a law in place that doesn’t get enforced ever. In hundreds of games I can’t recall an indirect free kick being awarded due to a keeper holding onto the ball for too long.

Another chance for referees to punish teams they don't like, who will time it the referee, I don't trust them.

    I like that idea.

I would also like to see a rule stating that 'all players should be standing when defending a set-piece' to stop the "draught excluder".

There is also a suggestion by Pierluigi Collina that penalties should be as in a penalty shootout, if the penalty is saved and rebounds, then the ball is dead and a goal kick is awarded.

This would be perfect for VAR

Just enforce the yellow card more forcefully. They make these rules and in an ideal world it makes sense but they also make more scenarios to get wrong. Sometimes it will be, sometimes they won’t do it.

People want consistency more than anything.

Current rule isn't enforced, can't remember seeing it once. So why would making a new rule that is stricter than the current unenforced rule help?

Agreed, just enforce the current rule.

Another thing they now ignore is keepers kicking outside of the box. 50% are handball, sometimes a yard or more.

Seems fair. If you can't score from a penalty you don't really deserve a tap in.

This is a perfect example of time-wasting. Short tap to team-mate, crowd around ball with no intention of crossing.

Easy fix would be to allow no player within 10 yards of the player taking the corner kick.

Would also like to see a rule reversal that a goal-kick should go straight out of the area.

What happens if the ball is initially saved but back-spin or a richochet off the keeper (after hitting a post / cross-bar) puts the ball in the net?

Don't worry about that...We have VAR for that sort of thing

Yes, the introduction of the short, ‘inside the area’ goal kick hasn’t improved the game one bit. Especially when teams feel they have to do it every bloody time. If they wanted to spice things up using this law, the attacking team should be allowed players in the area as well, that’d shake things up!

The ball doesn't need to travel a circumference to be in play, it just has to visibly move.

The ball is live, the team taking the short corner have no obligation to open up and be more expensive, that's on the other side to work out. Could argue what we did against villa by playing on our own goal line goes against the spirit of the game, stifles play, stops creativity etc, maybe that should be penalised in some way as well? For me, it's not a problem. Football is about working it out and finding solutions, more laws means more complications and less enjoyment.

It is the same rules as a penalty shootout, in those instances, it is a goal scored

How long will it be till the Canton start counting back from 8 just to put the keeper under pressure.
