Thread: Play offs. 2nd legs

    Re: Play offs. 2nd legs

A decent watch this Sunderland/Coventry game as its end to end, but let’s be honest here, there isn’t a Premier league player in sight. If either of these went up they’d need a complete clear out, and brand new squad.
The gulf in class between the 2 divisions is getting bigger all the time.

I can only see Ballard and Sakamoto being useful in the EPL

I don't think that Coventry deserved that, Sunderland frightened to death for most of the game but at least they got it over the line.

    FT: Sunderland 1 - 1 Coventry

Sunderland win 3 - 2 on agg thanks to Ballard's 120th min goal.

Cannot imagine how devastated you'd be driving back after that, totally undeserved. With that being said, how do you manage to leave somebody that wide open on the edge of the six yard box in that particular situation?

Think Coventry were unlucky. Absolute scenes when that winner went in. I don’t like teams with red and white stripes for some odd reason, and neither Sunderland or Sheff United are good enough for the premier league, they’ll be straight back down.

Don’t really think a Play Off Semi Final is the place to judge a player’s ability, but, essentially, I agree that it was hard to see any of the four involved being able to make a go of the Premier League next season. During the first half of the season you could perhaps make a case for Sunderland’s youngsters prospering at the higher level, but their fade out since around February suggests they’re not as good as they looked back in the autumn - I reckon they were lucky to see Coventry off.

Nevertheless, I’ll be supporting them in the Final, something which, on my current form, guarantees promotion for Chris Wilder, not one of my favourite managers, and his team!

I feel 3rd v 4th in final is always the right result.

Thought Sunderland were very lucky. Don't get me wrong, they defended superbly but they had to as they basically decided to see out the 2-1 aggregate score from the 1st minute.

Funnily enough in the 2nd half of extra time they played their best football and actually had a go.

Sunlun fans wont care how they got there but I reckon if they went out playing that way the fans would have been fuming.

sunderland, pushed, shoved, and time wasted themself into the final... was awful to see how they played, apparently all sorts of tricks being played from moving the ad boards closer to the pitch to stop cov long throwers, someone turned the heating on in there dressing room they time wasted every foul, every injury, every goal kick... but they never expected coventry to score when they did and took it to extra time, then you notice how sunderland had a bit of pep in there step speeding up throws and kicks... everyone was poised for pens until ballard nodding home which should have been coverd with steel...

sunderland wont beat sheff utd anyways as far as i can see

coventry should do well next season they been knocking on the door for sometime now

Nicely taken goal to give Orient the very early lead.

Some might call this match “kick and rush” football.

Cardiff certainly wouldn’t cope with the intensity/pace.

Nice little reference to Peter Kitchen there. Happy memories!

The thought of Leyton Orient being a division above us makes me want to die inside.

At least Stockport have a lot of momentum going on right now.

It’s more physical and the refs let more go

But our current team pisses all over both of these IMO

But what team will we have left. Hmmmm

Not sure which current team you have been watching. If we don’t up our energy levels considerably we will be mincemeat.

I worry about the pace and directness, oh and physicality. I think our current defence is suited less to this than even the more intricate passing movements of the champ.

I was just thinking exactly the same about Stockport. I remember seeing us away there in the early 90s with Gary Thompson dropping back to centre back in a brave 2-2 draw. Then they seemed to drop off the football radar. And now they could be a league above us?!

I'll give credit to Stockport, they seem like they've been on a trajectory similar to Wrexham's. Got out of the Conference before they did, escaped League 2 in the same season Wrexham did, and might be able to escape League 1 also like Wrexham. They're a well-operated machine.

Leyton Orient on the other hand are a high-tier League Two team, not a Championship team. Stockport in its current iteration could make a good go of it, Leyton Orient will just get sent straight back down.
