God knows. The amount of homework my son comes home with with questions spelled incorrectly and questions not explained properly is staggering.

My son just did his national numeracy test for maths,he got one question wrong,
10% of £80 = 20% of £ ?
He answered £40 but the correct answer is £1.60
Can anyone explain why in the format this question was written?

Is that really the question? If it's how you wrote it then he should be right.
Looks like they cocked up the question. 10% of £8 is 50% of £1.60, but that assumes 2 typos.Originally Posted by boyo wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:06
or you could use x's where the question marks are, the way it is written in the OP does look confusing.Originally Posted by boyo wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:06
did you see the question or did he tell you about it because that doesn't make any sense imo...
I still don't get it?!Originally Posted by qccfc wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:11
20% of 8 = 1.60Originally Posted by Optimistic Nick wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:15
I see. Yeah, I guess that is what they could have been getting at but they way you wrote it out actually makes sense - the OP's version does not.Originally Posted by qccfc wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:17
I worked the question out at 40 on the initial view of the OP.Originally Posted by Optimistic Nick wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:18
I think from the replies he answer correct for the way the question was written as a one liner,if the question was in two parts the answer could be £1.60.
20% of 10% of 80 = 1.60. That is, 2% of 80.
Yep me too. Question is written incorrectly.Originally Posted by qccfc wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:21
5% = Ian Rush
The actual question is rubbish. The answer as the question is written is clearly 40 GBP.Originally Posted by qccfc wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:11
If so, by what stroke of surrealism did they happen to do so?Originally Posted by boyo wrote on Wed, 29 April 2015 16:06

10% of £80 = 20% of £ is an equation.
.1*80 = .2*x
.1*80/.2 = x
8/.2 = x
40 = x
