I would have felt more sympathy for Gascoigne had he pled not guilty and stated in his defence that his remarks were innocent banter. Instead he pled guilty then insisted outside court that he wasn't racist.

And I'd bet that both you and the Colonel have been subjected to racism many times, albeit at the extraordinary low level that Gascoigne was prosecuted for.

I can't ever recall being subject to Racism, the only thing i've ever been judged on was where i was brought up-not the most quaint and tranquil of surroundings.

I suppose that for a Black person, the connotations run a whole lot deeper than just 'Hurt Feelings' if only it just was that. I find it incredible that you can be that blase about a subject that has huge historical weight behind it, singling a person out due to the colour of their skin isn't as simple as a throw away remark or insult, there are huge historical connotations behind what some percieve as harmless piss taking. Sure, white people have feelings, and they do get hurt, but the offence you may or may not have felt when your neighbour called you 'Honky' stopped right there, you would have grown to know that his racist comments, as wrong as they were, held no weight, and wouldn't affect your chances in life. There are plenty of black people who have been discriminated against for being black, and that alone. When dickheads like Gazza make moronic observations in the way he did, it manifests in such a way that is beyond being offended.

Sorry mate but people who hold opinions like yours do more harm than good in the long run. You seem to be implying that merely mentioning the colour of someone's skin is enough to cut them to pieces, causing a lifetime of irreparable physical damage.

As I've already said, there's nothing mystical about the feelings of any particular race of people, nobody likes having the piss taken out of them but treating certain sections of society differently is the definition of discrimination.

I don't know you from Adam, but in spite of your assertion I'd still be prepared to bet you have been the butt of racism many times. There's also an irony, certain sections of society have been treated differently because of discrimination, the law and policy makers (not that i have much time for them) have had to step in because of racism, sexism, exploitation. I see you've accused me of exaggerating, but that's rich coming from someone who thinks that non-white people have this other-worldly ability to suffer something more than hurt feelings when verbally insulted, but you can't seem to explain exactly what that is. As anyone who has worked on a building site for any length of time will attest, you hear all kinds of sexist, racist, ageist banter all day long, if it was taken as seriously as you seem to think it's supposed to then nothing would ever get built in this country and half the brickies, sparks and chippies in Britain would be in the dock.

I've been called every Welsh slur under the sun by English co-workers but thankfully I'm able to distinguish their intent and I'm also able to recognise that they aren't the same individuals that perpetrated the thousand-year long oppression and murder of countless of our countrymen, who exploited and killed Welsh workers, flooded our valleys and towns to make their reservoirs, punished the children who dared to speak their own language and endless more atrocities.

You asked a question, I answered it. Disabled people suffer huge discrimination. As for making jokes about them, as with everything else, it has to be taken in context.
